Open-Sora: Democratizing Efficient Video Production for All

We design and implement Open-Sora, an initiative dedicated to efficiently producing high-quality video. We hope to make the model, tools and all details accessible to all. By embracing open-source principles, Open-Sora not only democratizes access to advanced video generation techniques, but also offers a streamlined and user-friendly platform that simplifies the complexities of video generation. With Open-Sora, our goal is to foster innovation, creativity, and inclusivity within the field of content creation.

What is this?Open-Sora is an open-source initiative for efficiently producing high-quality video: it releases video generation models together with the tools, checkpoints and all training details.
So is this an app I can just use, or a model with code I run myself? It is a model plus code, not a finished app: you get checkpoints and training/inference code for a full video-generation pipeline. For a polished product the team points to their Video Ocean service.
How do I try it without installing anything?Quickest route is the hosted Gradio demo on Hugging Face Spaces — you generate videos right in the browser. To run or train it yourself, clone the repo and follow the installation docs for your version.
Do I need anything special installed to work with it?It is a Python project, so a Python environment is the baseline for running or training it.
What should I watch out for?The project is under active development, so your code branch must match the model version you want. Also, README demos are compressed GIFs — full-quality samples live in a separate Gallery.
What kind of hardware does it need?Training targets datacenter hardware — the cost-savings announcement is tied to NVIDIA H200 GPUs — and with 1B and 11B parameter models this is serious-GPU territory.
What changed between releases?v1.2 added a 3D-VAE, rectified flow and score conditioning; v1.3 upgraded the VAE and Transformer architecture for a big quality jump; 2.0 scaled to 11B parameters and matched HunyuanVideo at a fraction of the usual cost.
Is the training side open too, or just inference?Fully open — 2.0 ships both checkpoints and training code, and every release came with a detailed technical report, starting from v1.0's 3-day training run that produced 2s 512x512 videos.
Why does the team call it democratizing video production?Because everything needed to reproduce a competitive video model is public — weights, training code, preprocessing pipeline and cost breakdowns — which drops the entry price of serious video-generation research to about $200K.
