What is this?
This is the public repository of data sets and code behind the articles, graphics, and interactive features published by the journalism outlet FiveThirtyEight.
Is this one dataset or a collection of many?
It is an index of many separate datasets, one folder per story, each tied to a specific published article.
How do I find the data for a specific article?
Browse the repository's index, which links each folder to the story it accompanies, then open that subfolder for the CSVs and any analysis code.
Do I need anything special to use this data?
No special tooling is required beyond something that can open CSV files; some folders also include Jupyter notebooks for the accompanying analysis code.
Is all the data still being updated?
No. As of June 13, 2023, sports predictions and forecasts are no longer updated, so those datasets are frozen snapshots rather than live feeds.
Can I reuse this data and code freely?
Data sets are generally under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License and the code under the MIT License, though some datasets note their own exceptions.
What kinds of topics does the data cover?
The datasets span the range of FiveThirtyEight's coverage, including politics, sports, economics, science, and culture, each tied to a specific published story.
Why did FiveThirtyEight release this data?
To let readers and researchers verify, explore, and build on the data behind their journalism, in line with the outlet's data-driven reporting approach.
Should I credit FiveThirtyEight if I use this data?
The README asks that if you find the information useful, you let them know, and reuse should follow the CC-BY-4.0 attribution requirement for the data.
