Turn passing thoughts into notes that last

Write a quick entry, choose a workspace and notebook, and WakeGPT can keep appending it to your Markdown file. You do not need to organize folders, open an editor, or leave the task at hand. Capture the thought first and refine it later.

WakeGPT is useful when you want to:

What WakeGPT does

Capture from three places

Surface Best for
WakeGPT desktop app Managing workspaces, notebooks, history, and settings in one place.
macOS menu bar Opening a lightweight capture panel without leaving your current work.
ChatGPT side card Taking notes beside a conversation, switching notebooks, and placing selected entries into the ChatGPT composer.

The desktop app and quick panels keep their own current notebook and draft. Switching in one surface does not unexpectedly move another surface away from what you were viewing.

How an entry flows

  1. Enter text, Markdown, or a link, or paste an image.
  2. Choose the workspace inbox or a Markdown notebook.
  3. Submit once to save locally; when a notebook is bound, WakeGPT also appends the entry to its Markdown file.
  4. Return later to edit, move, delete, restore, or reuse the entry in ChatGPT.

WakeGPT manages only clearly marked quick-note regions in a Markdown file. The rest of the document remains yours to edit with any tool.

Project status

WakeGPT is open source and currently available as a macOS prototype. The v0.1.1 macOS release is available now.

Download v0.1.1 only from its official GitHub Release and compare its SHA-256 value with the included SHA256SUMS.txt. After trying to open WakeGPT once, macOS may require you to open System Settings → Privacy & Security and choose Open Anyway. See Apple's instructions for opening an app from an unknown developer. WakeGPT does not ask users to disable Gatekeeper or remove quarantine attributes with xattr.

Run from source

You will need Node.js, npm, Rustup, and the Tauri 2 system prerequisites.

git clone https://github.com/Awaker-OTE/WakeGPT.git
cd WakeGPT/apps/desktop
npm ci
npm test
npm run tauri build

For a macOS Universal build:

rustup target add aarch64-apple-darwin x86_64-apple-darwin
npm run release:macos-universal

Source builds remain development or local-verification artifacts. The downloadable v0.1.1 package is also unnotarized, but it was produced through WakeGPT's release checks and is published with checksums and supply-chain records.

Privacy and safety

Report security issues privately as described in SECURITY.md. Do not put vulnerability details, account information, or real user data in a public issue.

Searching Database…

What is this?WakeGPT is a local-first desktop app for quickly capturing text, Markdown, links, and images, and letting them grow into durable Markdown notes you can later reuse as context in ChatGPT.
Is this an editor, or more like a scratchpad that writes to my own Markdown files? It's a capture-first scratchpad, not a full editor: you write quick entries, pick a workspace/notebook, and WakeGPT appends them to a Markdown file you own, leaving the rest of the document free for you to edit with any tool.
How do I get it running?Download the v0.1.1 macOS release from the official GitHub Release and verify its SHA-256 against SHA256SUMS.txt, or build from source if you have Node.js, npm, Rustup, and the Tauri 2 prerequisites.
Will macOS just let me open it after downloading? No — the release isn't signed with an Apple Developer ID or notarized, so macOS Gatekeeper may block the first launch; you'll need to go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and choose Open Anyway.
Does it work on Intel Macs, or only Apple Silicon? The v0.1.1 Universal app bundle contains both Apple Silicon and Intel code, but only Apple Silicon has actually been verified; Intel hardware execution is unverified, and Windows x64 support is still in development and unreleased.
Does WakeGPT send my notes anywhere or read my ChatGPT login? No: notes, attachments, and workspace files stay local by default with telemetry off, ChatGPT integration only fills the composer without clicking Send, and it never reads or stores ChatGPT passwords, cookies, or login tokens.
How do I actually capture something, from entry to note? You enter text, Markdown, a link, or a pasted image, pick the workspace inbox or a bound notebook, and submit once; if a notebook is bound, the entry is saved locally and appended to its Markdown file, and you can later edit, move, delete, restore, or send it to ChatGPT.
Where can I trigger a quick capture besides the main app window?WakeGPT offers three capture surfaces: the full desktop app for managing workspaces and history, a macOS menu bar panel for quick capture without switching context, and an experimental ChatGPT side card for taking notes beside a conversation and inserting entries into the composer.
How does sending notes to ChatGPT work?Selected text and real image attachments are placed directly into the current ChatGPT composer for you to review, but WakeGPT never clicks Send on your behalf.
Is the ChatGPT side card reliable? It's experimental and only verified against the exact host versions recorded in the repo; if ChatGPT's interface changes, the side card safely disables itself rather than breaking.
