DeepSpeech is an open-source Speech-To-Text engine, using a model trained by machine learning techniques based on Baidu's Deep Speech research paper <https://arxiv.org/abs/1412.5567>. Project DeepSpeech uses Google's TensorFlow <https://www.tensorflow.org/> to make the implementation easier.

Documentation for installation, usage, and training models are available on deepspeech.readthedocs.io <https://deepspeech.readthedocs.io/?badge=latest>_.

For the latest release, including pre-trained models and checkpoints, see the latest release on GitHub <https://github.com/mozilla/DeepSpeech/releases/latest>_.

What is this?Mozilla DeepSpeech is an open-source Speech-To-Text engine — a machine-learning model that turns audio into text on your own hardware.
Is it a library I build into my own app, or a finished transcription program? It's an engine to build into your own products rather than a ready-made app — you embed it in software or devices that need speech-to-text.
What does it run on top of — do I have to train or install ML stuff myself? It's a C++ engine built on TensorFlow, and the model comes already trained — you run it as-is instead of training anything yourself.
Is this still maintained, or is it effectively finished? It's finished: the README opens by stating the project is discontinued, and the GitHub repo is archived, so it stays read-only with no further updates.
What hardware does it run on — will something small like a Raspberry Pi cope?It scales way down: the project says it runs in real time on devices from a Raspberry Pi 4 all the way up to high-power GPU servers.
Can it transcribe with the device completely off the network?Yes — offline, on-device use is the core design: transcription happens locally on the hardware with no cloud service in the loop.
Why run speech-to-text on-device instead of calling a cloud API?Because the whole pipeline runs on the device and audio is never uploaded — a good fit for private, air-gapped or low-connectivity environments — and being open source there is no per-request cloud cost.
What is the recognition model actually based on?A model trained with machine learning techniques following Baidu's Deep Speech research paper — the engine implements that published approach.
