kibana README

The project's README from github.com/elastic/kibana. As one markdown file: README.md.

Kibana

Kibana is the open source interface to query, analyze, visualize, and manage your data stored in Elasticsearch.

Getting Started

If you just want to try Kibana out, check out the Elastic Stack Getting Started Page to give it a whirl.

If you're interested in diving a bit deeper and getting a taste of Kibana's capabilities, head over to the Kibana Getting Started Page.

Using a Kibana Release

If you want to use a Kibana release in production, give it a test run, or just play around:

Building and Running Kibana, and/or Contributing Code

You might want to build Kibana locally to contribute some code, test out the latest features, or try out an open PR:

Documentation

Visit Elastic.co for the full Kibana documentation.

For information about building the documentation, see the README in elastic/docs.

Version Compatibility with Elasticsearch

Ideally, you should be running Elasticsearch and Kibana with matching version numbers. If your Elasticsearch has an older version number or a newer major number than Kibana, then Kibana will fail to run. If Elasticsearch has a newer minor or patch number than Kibana, then the Kibana Server will log a warning.

Note: The version numbers below are only examples, meant to illustrate the relationships between different types of version numbers.

Situation Example Kibana version Example ES version Outcome
Versions are the same. 7.15.1 7.15.1 💚 OK
ES patch number is newer. 7.15.0 7.15.1 ⚠️ Logged warning
ES minor number is newer. 7.14.2 7.15.0 ⚠️ Logged warning
ES major number is newer. 7.15.1 8.0.0 🚫 Fatal error
ES patch number is older. 7.15.1 7.15.0 ⚠️ Logged warning
ES minor number is older. 7.15.1 7.14.2 🚫 Fatal error
ES major number is older. 8.0.0 7.15.1 🚫 Fatal error

What is this?Kibana is the open source interface for querying, analyzing, visualizing, and managing your data stored in Elasticsearch — effectively the web window into an Elastic Stack deployment.
Is it a desktop app, or how do I actually open it?Neither — Kibana is a server you run alongside Elasticsearch, and you work with it through a web interface in your browser.
How do I get it running?Download the latest release from the Kibana Download Page and run it against your Elasticsearch. If you just want to kick the tires, start with the Elastic Stack Getting Started page, or use the hosted Elastic Cloud version.
Do I need Elasticsearch to use it?Yes — Kibana has no data store of its own; it queries, visualizes, and manages data that lives in Elasticsearch, so you need a running Elasticsearch instance.
Does my Elasticsearch version have to match exactly?Ideally yes: a major version mismatch in either direction is fatal and Kibana will fail to run, while Elasticsearch just being a newer minor or patch number only logs a warning.
Do I have to host and maintain the server myself? No — besides the download-and-run releases, Elastic offers a hosted version of Kibana on its Cloud Service.
What can I actually do with my data once it's connected?Kibana covers the whole explore-and-monitor workflow: ad hoc queries against Elasticsearch, dashboards and visualizations, plus metrics and observability views for watching how your systems behave.
How mature is this project?Very: development dates back to 2013, the repo has over 21,000 GitHub stars, and there is full documentation on Elastic.co plus a Kibana Discuss Forum for community help.
