What is this?Apache Superset is a modern, enterprise-ready business intelligence web application for data exploration and visualization: build dashboards, charts, and query data with a built-in SQL editor.
Is this a standalone app or a library I embed? It's a full web application (Flask backend + React frontend) that you deploy and run as a service, not a library you import into your own app.
How do I get it running? The fastest way is to follow Superset's quickstart guide, or use the provided Docker/Docker Compose setup for a local instance; production deployments have a separate guide.
Do I need a specific database driver to connect my data?Superset supports nearly any SQL database or data engine out of the box, but connecting to a specific one may require installing its corresponding Python DB driver.
Can I just write SQL instead of using the no-code builder?Yes — alongside the no-code chart builder there's a full web-based SQL Editor for advanced querying, so you can pick whichever fits a given task.
Is this meant to replace tools like Tableau or Looker?Yes, it's positioned as an alternative to proprietary BI tools, aimed at teams wanting a self-hosted, open-source replacement or complement to them.
Does it support custom metrics and dimensions without touching raw SQL every time?Yes, Superset includes a lightweight semantic layer for quickly defining custom dimensions and metrics on top of your data sources.
Can I control who sees what inside Superset?Superset has highly extensible security roles and authentication options, so access to data and dashboards can be restricted per user or role.
Can I automate dashboard creation or integrate Superset into other tools?Yes, Superset exposes a REST API for programmatic customization, letting you build on top of it or automate chart/dashboard management.
Will it handle a large number of users and big datasets?Superset has a cloud-native architecture designed from the ground up for scale, plus a configurable caching layer to reduce database load.
