DeskBox Windows desktop organizer with file, todo, search, weather, and music widgets

DeskBox organizes desktop files, maps existing folders, and keeps everyday tools close without replacing Explorer or changing how your files work. Its real-folder-backed widgets make it a modern open-source alternative to tools such as Stardock Fences, while Glance, todos, quick notes, search, weather, and music controls remain useful extras rather than the product's core promise.

Mica and Acrylic on the desktop

DeskBox uses native-feeling Windows materials and keeps ordinary desktop files and folders in place.

Download

The current stable release is DeskBox 1.4.9, available from GitHub Releases.

Both packages are Full Native AOT builds with the matching private Windows App Runtime 2.4, so they can install offline without downloading a separate .NET 10 or Windows App Runtime package.

Every release also publishes a matching .sha256 sidecar for each installer. The installers are currently unsigned, so verify the hash before running one if that matters to you.

DeskBox itself installs for the current user by default.

What is this?DeskBox is a free, open-source Windows desktop organizer that adds native-feeling WinUI 3 widgets backed by real folders, plus extras like todos, quick notes, search, weather, and music controls.
Does DeskBox replace Windows Explorer or change how my files work? No. It organizes desktop files and maps existing folders through its widgets without moving files out of normal reach or replacing Explorer.
How do I install DeskBox?Download the x64 or ARM64 installer for the current release (1.4.9) from GitHub Releases, check the matching .sha256 hash, then run it; the app installs for the current user by default.
Do I need to install .NET or any runtime separately? No, the installers are Full Native AOT builds that bundle the matching Windows App Runtime 2.4, so installation works fully offline. The search widget's file indexing, however, relies on the separate free 'Everything' tool, which is not bundled.
Are the installers signed? No, the installers are currently unsigned, so it's worth verifying the published .sha256 hash before running one.
Does it run on ARM-based Windows devices too?Yes, separate builds are published for x64 and ARM64, so it covers Intel/AMD PCs as well as Snapdragon and Surface Pro X devices.
What makes DeskBox different from Stardock Fences?Unlike simple icon groupers, DeskBox's widgets are backed by real folders you can create or map, so your files stay normal and fully accessible in Explorer while being organized visually, which is why the README calls it an open-source alternative to tools like Stardock Fences.
How does desktop search work?File results come from the separate 'Everything' tool's existing local index over IPC, merged in one popup window with DeskBox's own notes, todos, apps, and settings results.
What is Capsule mode?Capsule mode collapses widgets into small capsules that toggle on click or hover, show full info, a short summary, or just an icon/title, and can be arranged individually or combined into a movable bar.
Which languages does DeskBox support?Twelve languages with matching resource coverage, including English, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Japanese, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Hindi, Spanish, French, Arabic, Bengali, and Russian.
