💻 System Requirements

Windows

macOS

Installing Subtitle Edit on macOS

As of v5.1.0-rc13, the .dmg is signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so it opens normally — no Terminal quarantine-removal step is needed:

  1. Download and double-click the .dmg file to mount it.
  2. In the window that appears, drag Subtitle Edit.app into your Applications folder.
  3. Open Subtitle Edit from Applications (or Launchpad).

Linux

Flatpak (any distribution)

A Flatpak package is available from the Releases page. It bundles all required dependencies (mpv, ffmpeg) — no separate installation needed.

flatpak install SubtitleEdit-linux-x64.flatpak
flatpak run dk.nikse.subtitleedit

Native packages

Requires mpv and ffmpeg (ffmpeg is normally already installed) to enable video functionality.

Debian/Ubuntu

sudo apt update && sudo apt install -y mpv libmpv-dev ffmpeg

Arch

sudo pacman -S mpv ffmpeg

Fedora

sudo dnf install mpv-libs ffmpeg

openSUSE

sudo zypper install libmpv1 ffmpeg

⚙️ Note: The provided builds are self-contained and do not require a separate .NET installation.

🔒 Privacy

Subtitle Edit is an offline, open-source application.
It does not collect, store, transmit, or analyze the content of your subtitle files, media files, or any associated metadata — not for analytics, not for model training, and not for any other secondary purpose, now or in the future.

All core features, including editing, converting, video playback, and local auto-backup, run entirely on your device.

If you choose to use optional third-party online services within Subtitle Edit (such as translation, speech-to-text, text-to-speech, OCR, or dictionary/lookups), only the minimal data required to perform that specific request is sent directly to the selected provider. Any such data transfer is governed by the provider’s own privacy policy, and Subtitle Edit does not retain or forward this data in any way.

Subtitle Edit aims to give you full control over your files — your data stays yours.

What is this?Subtitle Edit is an open-source subtitle editor: it creates, edits, converts and syncs subtitle files, with video playback built in so you can time lines against the actual media.
Is it a desktop program I install, or something that runs in the browser? It is a desktop application you install locally, with dedicated builds for Windows, macOS and Linux — not a web app — and it works fully offline.
How do I install it on macOS?Download the .dmg from the Releases page, double-click it and drag Subtitle Edit.app into Applications. Since v5.1.0-rc13 it is signed and notarized, so it opens normally — no Terminal quarantine-removal step needed.
Do I need to install mpv, ffmpeg or .NET separately?Packaged builds need nothing extra: the macOS .dmg and the Linux Flatpak bundle libmpv and ffmpeg, and all builds are self-contained, so no separate .NET installation is required. Only native Linux packages expect mpv and ffmpeg to already be present.
Will it run on my older Windows 10 machine? You need Windows 10 version 22H2 (build 19045) or newer, fully updated. Older Windows 10 builds are end-of-life and may fail to start with a .NET runtime error (0x80131506).
What are my options on Linux? Two routes: a Flatpak from the Releases page that works on any distribution and bundles mpv and ffmpeg, or native packages for Debian/Ubuntu, Arch, Fedora and openSUSE, which require mpv and ffmpeg installed separately.
Does the app send my subtitle or media files anywhere? All core features run entirely on your device — it does not collect, store or transmit your subtitle or media files. Only optional online services such as translation, speech-to-text, OCR and text-to-speech send the minimal data needed for that request directly to the provider you picked.
What can it do besides editing subtitle lines?Beyond manual editing it converts between subtitle formats, syncs timings, plays video alongside the text and keeps local auto-backups. It also offers optional translation, speech-to-text, text-to-speech and OCR through third-party online services.
Is Subtitle Edit free to use?Yes. It is open source under the MIT license, and continued development is funded by donations via GitHub Sponsors and PayPal.
Why do mpv and ffmpeg keep coming up in the README?They power the video playback that lets you check subtitle timing against the actual picture. The macOS .dmg and the Linux Flatpak bundle them; on native Linux packages you install them yourself.
