System Informer

A free, powerful, multi-purpose tool that helps you monitor system resources, debug software and detect malware.
Brought to you by Winsider Seminars & Solutions, Inc.

System requirements

Windows 10 or higher, 32-bit or 64-bit.

Features

Building the project

Requires Visual Studio (2022 or later).

After cloning the repo run build_init.cmd located in the build directory, this doesn't not run again unless there are updates to the tools or third party libraries.

Execute build_release.cmd located in the build directory to compile the project or load the SystemInformer.sln and Plugins.sln solutions if you prefer building the project using Visual Studio.

You can download the free Visual Studio Community Edition to build the System Informer source code.

See the build readme for more information or if you're having trouble building.

Enhancements/Bugs

Settings

If you are running System Informer from a USB drive, you may want to save System Informer's settings there as well. To do this, create a blank file named "SystemInformer.exe.settings.xml" in the same directory as SystemInformer.exe. You can do this using Windows Explorer:

  1. Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unticked in Tools > Folder options > View.
  2. Right-click in the folder and choose New > Text Document.
  3. Rename the file to SystemInformer.exe.settings.xml (delete the ".txt" extension).

What is this?System Informer is a free, powerful multi-purpose tool for Windows that helps you monitor system resources, debug software and detect malware.
Is this a windowed desktop app or a command-line utility? It's a native Windows desktop application with a full GUI - graphs, statistics and process management. It's small and portable, so it runs without installation, even straight from a USB drive.
How do I get it - is there an installer? No installer: it's small and portable, so you just download the binary and run it. To build from source you need Visual Studio 2022 or later (the free Community Edition works): run buildinit.cmd in the build directory once, then buildrelease.cmd to compile, or open SystemInformer.sln and Plugins.sln directly.
Will it run on Windows 7 or 8?No - it requires Windows 10 or higher, in either 32-bit or 64-bit. Older Windows versions are not supported.
Does everything run locally, or does it need an internet connection? It's fully local - it monitors the machine it runs on in real time. The README mentions no accounts, sign-ins or online services.
Is it really free, or is there a paid version?Completely free - it's 100% free software released under the MIT license, with no paid tier.
How is it different from the regular Task Manager? It digs deeper: you can see which process is holding a file you can't delete, which programs have active network connections (and close them), watch disk access in real time, view detailed stack traces with kernel-mode, WOW64 and .NET support, and control services beyond what services.msc allows. Graphs and statistics help you track down resource hogs and runaway processes.
Can it actually detect malware? That's one of its stated purposes: by exposing what every process does - file, network and disk activity plus deep stack traces - it lets you spot suspicious behavior. Treat it as a powerful inspection tool rather than a replace-and-forget antivirus.
If I run it from a USB drive, can my settings travel with it?Yes. Create a blank file named 'SystemInformer.exe.settings.xml' in the same folder as SystemInformer.exe, and your settings will be saved there instead of on the host PC.
Is this the tool that used to be called Process Hacker?Yes - the repository still carries the 'processhacker' topic. System Informer is the new name of that long-running Windows internals project, written in C and maintained by Winsider Seminars & Solutions.
