Calculator

The Windows Calculator app is a modern Windows app written in C++ and C# that ships pre-installed with Windows. The app provides standard, scientific, and programmer calculator functionality, as well as a set of converters between various units of measurement and currencies.

Calculator ships regularly with new features and bug fixes. You can get the latest version of Calculator in the Microsoft Store.

Roadmap

For information regarding Windows Calculator plans and release schedule, please see the Windows Calculator Roadmap.

Graphing Mode

Adding graphing calculator functionality is on the project roadmap and we hope that this project can create a great end-user experience around graphing. To that end, the UI from the official in-box Windows Calculator is currently part of this repository, although the proprietary Microsoft-built graphing engine, which also drives graphing in Microsoft Mathematics and OneNote, is not. Community members can still be involved in the creation of the UI, however developer builds will not have graphing functionality due to the use of a mock implementation of the engine built on top of a common graphing API.

Diagnostic Data

This project collects usage data and sends it to Microsoft to help improve our products and services. Read our privacy statement to learn more. Diagnostic data is disabled in development builds by default, and can be enabled with the SEND_DIAGNOSTICS build flag.

Currency Converter

Windows Calculator includes a currency converter feature that uses mock data in developer builds. The data that Microsoft uses for the currency converter feature (e.g., in the retail version of the application) is not licensed for your use. The mock data will be clearly identifiable as it references planets instead of countries, and remains static regardless of selected inputs.

Searching Database…

What is this? The official Windows Calculator that ships pre-installed with Windows, open-sourced by Microsoft — a modern Windows app written in C++ and C#, updated regularly with new features via the Microsoft Store.
Is this the real Calculator from Windows, or a separate clone? It's the genuine article: the UI of the official in-box app lives in this repository and Microsoft keeps shipping it with Windows. This repo is its source code, not a remake.
Do I have to build it, or can I just download it?Just download it — the latest version is available in the Microsoft Store. Building from source is mainly for contributors who want to work on the code.
Is the open-source version missing anything the shipped app has?Yes: the graphing engine is proprietary Microsoft tech, so developer builds ship a mock engine and have no working graphing. The dev-build currency converter also runs on mock data referencing planets instead of countries.
Does the app send any of my data to Microsoft?Yes — Calculator collects diagnostic usage data and sends it to Microsoft. In developer builds this is disabled by default and only enabled with the SENDDIAGNOSTICS build flag.
What can it do beyond basic arithmetic?Standard mode evaluates commands as you enter them, scientific mode follows order of operations, and programmer mode covers developer math including base conversions. There's also date calculation, unit and currency conversion, calculation history with memory, and infinite precision for the four basic operations.
Why does the currency converter show planets instead of countries? That's the mock data used in developer builds — the real currency data Microsoft uses in the retail version is not licensed for your use. The mock values also stay static no matter what inputs you select.
Is the graphing calculator available yet? It's on the roadmap but not functional: the graphing UI is in the repo so the community can shape it, while the engine that would power it is proprietary and replaced by a mock implementation in developer builds.
