History of this Repository

Previously, this repository contained the source code for the open source version of Lens Desktop product. The open source version of Lens Desktop has been retired and is no longer maintained. The Lens Desktop product by Mirantis is still actively developed and supported by Mirantis, but contributions are now made through extensions using the Lens extension API, rather than directly to the core product. The legacy source code for the open source version is still available in the repository's 'master'-branch.

What is this?Lens is a desktop IDE for Kubernetes — one context-aware UI for managing and troubleshooting clusters and workloads, and the most popular one out there, with over 1 million users.
Is this a web dashboard I deploy into my cluster, or something I install? It is a desktop application — Lens Desktop — that you install on your own machine and point at your clusters. It is not a dashboard you deploy inside the cluster.
How do I get it running?Download and install Lens Desktop from the Lens website (lens.app) and connect it to your clusters. Building from this repository is no longer a supported path — that open source build is retired.
Is this still an active open source project? The open source version of Lens Desktop has been retired and is no longer maintained. Mirantis still actively develops the current product, and the legacy source code stays on the repository's master branch.
Who is Lens for?Developers and DevOps engineers who work with Kubernetes day to day. The README also pitches it to teams as a way to learn Kubernetes and reduce the number of tools needed for cloud native development.
What does the MIT license actually cover here?Only this repository's content — the legacy source code — is released under the MIT license. The Lens Desktop product itself is Mirantis software, and Lens and its logo are Mirantis trademarks.
What would I actually do with it day to day?Hands-on cluster work: inspecting state, managing and troubleshooting workloads and resources through one UI instead of hopping between dashboards and terminal output. It is built for the operations side of running Kubernetes.
Can I still fork the old open source version? In principle yes — the repository content is MIT and the legacy code lives on the master branch. Just remember it is retired, unmaintained code that will drift further from the current Lens Desktop over time.
