What is this?Khoj is an open-source personal AI — a 'second brain' that answers your questions from the web and your own documents, runs custom agents for you, and works with any online or local LLM.
Is it a hosted service, or something I run on my own machine? Both. It's open-source and self-hostable — you can run it privately on your own computer — or start instantly on their cloud app with no setup.
How do I get it running if I want to self-host it?Follow the self-hosting docs. The repo ships Docker and docker-compose files, so Docker Compose is the standard way to run the server; otherwise just use the cloud app.
Do I need paid API keys for models, or can it run local ones?Either: it chats with local models like llama3, qwen, gemma or mistral, or online ones like gpt, claude, gemini and deepseek. Each agent can use its own chat model.
Can it answer questions from my own documents? Which formats?Yes — it reads PDFs, Markdown, Notion, Word docs, org-mode files, images and more, and finds the right one with advanced semantic search.
Can I build my own agents inside it?Yes. Agents get custom knowledge, a persona, a chat model and tools for any role, and there's a step-by-step blog guide to build your own.
Where do I actually use it day to day? From your Browser, Obsidian, Emacs, the Desktop app, your Phone, or Whatsapp.
If I self-host it, does my data stay on my machine?Yes — Khoj is built to run privately on your own computer, and with a local LLM your docs and chats never have to leave your machine.
What is Khoj Enterprise? The commercial offering for organizations: Khoj available as a cloud service, on-premises, or as a hybrid solution — on top of the free open-source app you can self-host.
What is Pipali?A new open-source project from the Khoj team, introduced in the README as an AI coworker that runs on your computer.
