About the name

The name Karakeep is inspired by the Arabic word "كراكيب" (karakeeb), a colloquial term commonly used to refer to miscellaneous clutter, odds and ends, or items that may seem disorganized but often hold personal value or hidden usefulness. It evokes the image of a messy drawer or forgotten box, full of stuff you can't quite throw away—because somehow, it matters (or more likely, because you're a hoarder!).

Stack

Why did I build it?

I browse reddit, twitter and hackernews a lot from my phone. I frequently find interesting stuff (articles, tools, etc) that I'd like to bookmark and read later when I'm in front of a laptop. Typical read-it-later apps usecase. Initially, I was using Pocket for that. Then I got into self-hosting and I wanted to self-host this usecase. I used memos for those quick notes and I loved it but it was lacking some features that I found important for that usecase such as link previews and automatic tagging (more on that in the next section).

I'm a systems engineer in my day job (and have been for the past 7 years). I didn't want to get too detached from the web development world. I decided to build this app as a way to keep my hand dirty with web development, and at the same time, build something that I care about and use every day.

What is this?Karakeep (formerly Hoarder) is a self-hostable bookmark-everything app: save links, notes, images and PDFs, and it auto-fetches link details, tags everything with an LLM and gives you full-text and semantic search over all of it.
Is it a phone app, a browser extension, or a website? It's a web app you run on your own server. Around that core you get Chrome, Firefox and Safari extensions for quick saving, iOS and Android apps with offline reading, and a REST API with multiple clients.
How do I get it running?Deploy it on your own server following the Installation docs (Docker is the standard route), then point the browser extension or mobile app at your instance. A seeded read-only demo lets you look around before installing.
Do I need an OpenAI API key for the automatic tagging? Not necessarily: tagging and summarization are LLM-based (OpenAI is in the default stack), but local models via Ollama are supported, so the AI features can run without any paid API.
Do I have to run my own server, or is there a hosted option?Self-hosting is the primary path, so you maintain the instance — in exchange your data stays on your hardware. If you'd rather not, the official alternative is managed Karakeep Cloud at cloud.karakeep.app, funded by paid subscriptions.
What can I actually save in it — just links?Links, simple notes, images and PDFs. For links it auto-fetches the title, description and image; you can sort saves into lists (shared lists support collaboration), mark highlights, and import existing bookmarks from Chrome, Pocket, Linkwarden, Omnivore and Tab Session Manager.
How does the search work — will it find text inside images? You get full-text and semantic search across everything stored, and OCR extracts text from images so even screenshots become searchable. Under the hood the search runs on Meilisearch.
What happens when a saved link dies later? That's covered: Karakeep does full-page archival with monolith to protect against link rot and auto-archives videos with yt-dlp.
Why did the author build this instead of using Pocket? They kept saving finds from Reddit, Twitter and Hacker News to read later on a laptop, and after getting into home-labbing wanted that read-it-later workflow self-hosted. Pocket is shutting down, so they built Karakeep as a tool they use daily — and to stay hands-on with web development.
