Genex

Desktop app for game dev with AI.

Latest release MIT license Build status

Genex: a game built in chat, with its assets beside it

Download

Platform Download
macOS (Apple Silicon) Genex.dmg
Linux (x64) .deb, .rpm or .zip from the latest release
Windows Soon

Genex is early: expect rough edges, and tell us about them in issues.

What it does

→ Use your Claude Code or ChatGPT subscription
→ Or run local models
→ Multi-agent game dev: mix Opus and GPT models across the main agent, workers and reviewers
→ Make 3D assets locally with the Blender plugin
→ Meshy, Tripo, ElevenLabs and more through the Genex tools router
→ Export anywhere, or publish to the web
→ Unity and Unreal plugins soon
→ Native C++ games soon

[!TIP] Have a tool your games need? Build a plugin and put it in the Genex Marketplace for everyone.

Contributing

You need macOS on Apple Silicon, Git and Node 24.

git clone https://github.com/genex-games/genex-desktop.git
cd genex-desktop
nvm install && nvm use # Node 24, from .nvmrc
npm ci
npm run studio:dev -- start --profile first-run --fixture app-basics

The fixture runs the app with scripted models and sample games, so it needs no account. Read CONTRIBUTING.md before you open a pull request; coding agents start at AGENTS.md.

Build a plugin

Plugins give Genex's agents new tools: an asset generator, an engine bridge, a service your game talks to. The Blender and Genex tools that ship with the app are plugins too. From a Genex checkout:

npm run plugin:new -- my-plugin --out ~/studio-plugins # scaffold it from the example
npm run plugin:doctor -- ~/studio-plugins/my-plugin # check it the way Genex will
  1. Try it: in the app, Plugins → Add → Load local plugin… and pick the folder.
  2. Share it: push it to a public GitHub repository and publish a release for each version. Anyone can install it from there with Plugins → Add → Install from GitHub….
  3. List it: open a pull request to genex-plugins. A maintainer reviews it, and it appears in every Genex app's Marketplace.

The plugin guide covers tools, panels, settings and accounts.

What is this?Genex is a desktop app for building games with AI: it runs multi-agent workflows (a main agent plus worker and reviewer agents) that can use your Claude Code or ChatGPT subscription, or local models, to help with game development.
Is this a game engine, or does it work alongside my existing engine? It is a standalone desktop app, not a game engine itself. It exports assets and work anywhere, and Unity and Unreal Engine plugins are planned (not available yet).
Do I need a Claude Code or ChatGPT subscription? You can use an existing Claude Code or ChatGPT subscription for the AI agents, or run local models instead — no specific subscription is mandatory.
Any rough edges I should expect right now?The project is explicitly early-stage, so bugs are expected. Windows support isn't ready, and native C++ game export plus Unity/Unreal plugins are all still listed as 'soon'.
What is the Genex Marketplace? It's a directory of community-built plugins — asset generators, engine bridges, or services — that anyone can install straight from a GitHub release, after a maintainer approves a pull request to the genex-plugins repo.
How does the multi-agent setup work?Genex can mix different models, like Opus and GPT, across a main agent, worker agents, and reviewer agents, so different models handle different roles in building the game.
Can I generate 3D assets without leaving the app?Yes — Genex ships a Blender plugin for local 3D asset generation, and its built-in tools router can also call out to services like Meshy, Tripo, and ElevenLabs.
How do I build and share my own plugin?Load a local plugin folder in-app via Plugins → Add → Load local plugin, then push it to a public GitHub repo with a release so others can install it via Plugins → Add → Install from GitHub, and open a PR to genex-plugins to get it listed in the Marketplace.
