Harness engineering is the discipline of designing the scaffolding — context delivery, tool interfaces, planning artifacts, verification loops, memory systems, and sandboxes — that surrounds an AI agent and determines whether it succeeds or fails on real tasks.

This list focuses on the harness, not the model. Every component here exists because the model can't do it alone — and the best harnesses are designed knowing those components will become unnecessary as models improve.

Contents

Foundations

Canonical essays that define what harness engineering is and why it matters.

Design Primitives

Harness components organized by the problem they solve, not by vendor.

What is this?A curated list of resources on 'harness engineering' — the discipline of designing the scaffolding (context delivery, tool interfaces, planning artifacts, verification loops, memory, sandboxes) around an AI agent that determines whether it succeeds on real tasks.
Is this a piece of software, or just a curated reading list? It's a markdown awesome-list of links to essays, papers, and reference implementations — nothing to install or run, just a reading and reference index.
How is the list organized, and where should a beginner start? It's split into sections covering Foundations, Design Primitives, Agent Loop, Planning, Context Delivery, Tool Design, Skills & MCP, Permissions, Memory, Orchestration, Verification, Observability, Reference Implementations, Templates and more. A newcomer should start with Foundations — OpenAI's and Anthropic's framing essays on what harness engineering actually is.
Are the entries vetted, and is the list still being updated? Each entry carries a short annotation describing its specific contribution (a pattern, failure mode, or finding) rather than being a bare link dump, and entries are dated through mid-2026, so it looks actively maintained.
Who is this collection meant for?Engineers and researchers building AI agent systems who need to design the scaffolding (context, tools, memory, verification) around a model, not just write prompts for it.
Does it include real production case studies, not just theoretical essays?Yes — for example Microsoft's Azure SRE Agent, which has handled 35,000+ production incidents and cut mitigation time from 40.5 hours to 3 minutes, and Meta's Ranking Engineer Agent for multi-day ML pipeline automation.
What's the difference between a harness and the underlying model? The harness is everything around the model — context delivery, tool interfaces, planning artifacts, verification loops, memory, and sandboxes — that determines whether an agent succeeds on real tasks, as distinct from the model's raw capabilities.
Can I reuse templates from this list directly in my own project?Yes, it has a dedicated Templates section alongside Reference Implementations and Demo Harnesses, pointing to concrete reusable artifacts rather than only theory.
Why does the list stress that harness components become unnecessary as models improve?Because harness pieces exist to compensate for things the model currently can't do on its own, so the best designs anticipate removing that scaffolding as model capabilities grow.
