OpenDiablo2 is an ARPG game engine in the same vein of the 2000's games, and supports playing Diablo 2.

The engine is written in Go and is cross platform.

The project does not ship with the assets or content required to play Diablo 2. You must have a legally purchased copy of Diablo 2 and its expansion Lord of Destruction installed on your computer in order to run that game on this engine.

If you like to contribute to OpenDiablo2, please be so kind to read our Contribution Policy first.

What is this?OpenDiablo2 is an open-source re-implementation of Diablo 2: an ARPG game engine written in Go, styled after early-2000s action RPGs, that can run the original game.
So is it the actual Diablo 2 game, or an engine I run the game on?It is only the engine, not the game: it re-creates Diablo 2's behavior while all art, sound and content come from your own installation. The project ships none of the game's assets.
How do I get it running?Install OpenDiablo2 on your system following the Install guide for Linux, Windows or macOS, then point it at the MPQ files from your Diablo 2 installation — the docs have a page on locating them.
Do I need my own copy of Diablo 2 to use it?Yes. You must have a legally purchased copy of Diablo 2 with its Lord of Destruction expansion installed on your computer; the engine reads the game data from it.
Is the project still actively developed? No — the GitHub repository is archived and read-only, so development has stopped. The code and documentation remain available, but don't expect further updates or fixes.
Is this meant for players or for developers? Both: players can run their own copy of Diablo 2 on the engine, while developers are welcome to contribute after reading the Contribution Policy, with docs covering building, development, profiling and debugging.
Which platforms does it run on?The engine is written in Go and is cross-platform, with install instructions covering Linux, Windows and macOS.
Is it legal to play Diablo 2 through this engine? The project is open source but unaffiliated with Blizzard: it is neither developed by nor endorsed by Blizzard or Activision, and all Diablo 2 content and trademarks remain Blizzard's property. That is exactly why it requires your own legally purchased game files.
What are MPQ files and why do I need them?MPQ archives hold Diablo 2's game data — art, sounds, levels. OpenDiablo2 reads them from your installed copy of the game, and the documentation includes a dedicated page on locating those files.
Can I reuse the engine code for my own projects? The code is released under GPL-3.0, so you can use and modify it as long as derivative works are distributed under compatible GPL terms.
