What is this?dnscrypt-proxy is a flexible DNS proxy that supports modern encrypted DNS protocols like DNSCrypt v2, DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH), Anonymized DNSCrypt and ODoH, so your DNS queries can't be read or tampered with in transit.
Is this a library or a standalone app I run? It's a standalone proxy daemon you run on your machine or router; it sits between your system and DNS resolvers, not something you embed in code.
How do I get it running?Download the pre-built binary or source for your OS/architecture from the latest release, then follow the installation instructions, including how to verify binary signatures.
Does hot-reloading config work out of the box?No, optional hot-reloading of configuration files has been disabled by default since v2.1.10, so you need to explicitly enable it if you want that behavior.
How does it hide my DNS traffic and client IP?It encrypts and authenticates DNS traffic, and can additionally hide your client IP using Tor, SOCKS proxies, or Anonymized DNS relays, with ODoH for further unlinkability.
Can it block ads and malware domains?Yes, it includes filtering to block ads, malware and other unwanted content, and is compatible with all DNS services.
Does it balance load between multiple DNS resolvers?Yes, you can pick a set of resolvers and dnscrypt-proxy automatically measures their speed and balances traffic across the fastest ones.
What is the cloaking feature for?Cloaking works like a HOSTS file on steroids, returning preconfigured addresses for specific names, which is handy for local development or forcing safe search on sites like Google and DuckDuckGo.
Does it cache DNS responses?Yes, it has built-in DNS caching to reduce latency and improve privacy, plus local IPv6 blocking to speed up IPv4-only networks.
