What is this?DPlayer is an open-source HTML5 video player with built-in danmaku — scrolling bullet comments — made to help people build video and danmaku into websites easily.
Is it a library I embed into my site, or a standalone app?It is a front-end JavaScript library you embed in web pages, not a standalone app. Ready-made integrations exist for WordPress, Typecho, Hexo, Z-BlogPHP, Discuz!, Vue and React.
How do I add it to a project?Install the dplayer package from npm, then initialize a DPlayer instance on a container element in your page; the README links to the docs for the full setup guide.
Do I need to run my own backend for the danmaku?Yes — DPlayer itself is front-end only. The README points to separate community danmaku backends: DPlayer-node (Node.js), laravel-danmaku (PHP), dplayer-live-backend (Node.js with WebSocket for live) and RailsGun (Ruby).
Who is using it in production?Mostly Chinese platforms and communities: the Xuexi Qiangguo learning app (学习强国), Xiaohongshu (小红书), GeekTime (极客时间), the anime site 嘀哩嘀哩, Zhejiang University's CC98 forum and the Cloudreve cloud-drive system.
What features come built into the player?Danmaku, screenshot capture, hotkeys, quality switching, seek-bar thumbnails and subtitle support.
Are there tools around it for bigger setups?Yes — DPlayer-thumbnails generates video thumbnails, DPlayer-Lite is a lighter version, and hlsjs-p2p-engine or CBPlayer turn viewers into an unlimitedly scalable P2P CDN for HLS and DASH streams.
How mature is the project? It has been around since 2016, counts about 16.5k GitHub stars, and is authored and maintained by DIYgod with help from contributors.
