FAQ

Searching Database…

What is this?Animeko (formerly Ani) is a one-stop app for finding, following and watching seasonal anime: Bangumi cloud sync of watch progress, aggregated video sources, danmaku comments and offline caching, built 100% in Kotlin/Compose Multiplatform.
Is it just a player, or does it track my shows too?It covers the whole workflow, not just playback: you browse anime info and community ratings from Bangumi, follow shows via a precise seasonal timetable, and progress syncs automatically — reopening the app resumes right where you stopped.
Does Animeko host any of the content itself? No — all video data comes from the network (BT peers or third-party sites); the app stores nothing itself. Note that with BT sources it automatically seeds back what you download, so you upload while watching.
Is it a phone app, or does it run on desktop too? Both — official builds cover Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and Linux, and the UI is adapted for tablets and large screens.
Can I download episodes and watch them offline?Yes — every source type supports caching, so episodes can be saved for offline viewing.
What video tech does it use under the hood?A Compose Multiplatform UI on a Kotlin Multiplatform core. Playback runs on ExoPlayer for Android and VLC on desktop, and the BitTorrent engine is built on libtorrent.
Can I hook it up to my own media server?Yes — besides torrents and online sources it connects to Jellyfin and Emby servers, and there is a built-in custom data source editor with an automatic source selector.
Why do some people call it Ani?The app was formerly named Ani and is still often shortened to that; Animeko and Ani are the same project.
Does using it cost anything? No — the app is free and open source under AGPL-3.0, and its danmaku server runs as a free public service.
