🛠 How it works

The UI (this repo) is a React app, but the brains live in stremio-core — Stremio's Rust engine compiled to WebAssembly and running in a Web Worker. The UI renders state, the core computes it. Playback goes through stremio-video, which picks the right player implementation for the environment.

Searching Database…

What is this?Stremio Web is the official web UI of Stremio — a modern media center ('Freedom to Stream') that works as a one-stop hub for your video entertainment.
Is this the full Stremio app, or just one part of it?Just the UI: this repo is the React front end, while the core logic lives in stremio-core — a Rust engine compiled to WebAssembly and running in a Web Worker — and playback goes through stremio-video.
If I want to run it myself, how do I start?Install Node.js 22+ and pnpm 11+, then run pnpm start for a dev server with hot reload; pnpm run build makes a production build.
Do I need a Stremio account to use it?Your library and Continue Watching follow your Stremio account, so signing in is what keeps them in sync across devices.
Where do the movies and shows actually come from? From addons — the app ships no content of its own; addons provide the catalogs of movies, series and channels you browse, so it is only as full as the addons you add.
Does it only live in a browser tab, or can I install it?Both: it runs as a web app and installs as a standalone PWA, and you can cast playback to the big screen via Chromecast.
Can I build my own addon?Yes — the ecosystem includes stremio-addon-sdk, which lets you build your own addon in Node.js. Addons are what provide the catalogs of movies, series and channels you browse in the app.
Can I run my own copy instead of the official site?Yes — the repo includes a Docker setup, and pnpm run build creates a production build you can host yourself.
Is it available in my language?Probably — the UI comes community-translated in 50+ languages via the stremio-translations project, and you can contribute a missing translation.
Does the player work without a mouse?Yes — it is a keyboard-first player with full playback control from the keyboard, and subtitles (addon-provided or local) support customizable styling.
