996.ICU README

The project's README from github.com/996icu/996.ICU. As one markdown file: README.md.

996.ICU

Please note that there exists NO other official account, app or merchandise except for the official domain and this repository.

The name 996.ICU refers to "Work by '996', sick in ICU", an ironic saying among Chinese developers, which means that by following the "996" work schedule, you are risking yourself getting into the ICU (Intensive Care Unit).

What is 996?

A "996" work schedule refers to an unofficial work schedule (9 a.m.–9 p.m., 6 days per week) that has been gaining popularity. Serving a company that encourages the "996" work schedule usually means working for at least 60 hours per week. Visit 996 working hour system on Wikipedia for more details.

Where are the issues?

Even with interaction limits on, the issues area was totally out of control. So I personally decided to switch it off, not by GitHub or others.

What is this?A protest initiative by Chinese IT practitioners against the '996' overtime culture, started in March 2019 — it has since drawn about 277k GitHub stars.
Is this an actual app, or something else?It is not software at all: the repository is essentially one big README — a manifesto and evidence lists — and it warns there is no official app or merchandise.
Why are there no open issues on this repo?Discussion there spiralled out of control even with interaction limits, so the author disabled issues himself — not GitHub and not anyone else.
Is this only for developers in China? No — the README welcomes people from other fields and other countries, and stresses it is not a political movement but an effort to uphold labour law.
What is the Anti-996 License trying to do?It keeps software away from companies that violate labour law to pressure them to change; the draft is adapted from MIT and meant to be compatible with all major open source licenses.
What does the name 996.ICU actually stand for?It comes from an ironic saying among Chinese developers: work by '996' — 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., 6 days a week, 60-plus hours — and you risk ending up sick in the ICU.
How can I show my support as a developer? You can update the list with evidence, put the 996.ICU badge in your project's README, propose improvements — or, in the README's words, go home at 6 pm without feeling sorry.
What other repos belong to this movement?A whole ecosystem: 955.WLB lists companies with 955 work-life balance, 996.LIST ranks 996 and 955 companies, 996.Leave covers working overseas, plus 996.Petition, 996.survey and more.
Did the protest get any attention outside GitHub?Yes — the README collects press coverage from the Financial Times, Wired and RadiiChina, and Python creator Guido van Rossum called the '996' schedule 'inhumane'.
