KernelSU

logo

A kernel-based root solution for Android devices.

Latest release Weblate Channel License: GPL v2 GitHub License

Features

  1. Kernel-based su and root access management.
  2. Module system based on metamodules: Pluggable infrastructure for systemless modifications.
  3. App Profile: Lock up the root power in a cage.

Compatibility state

KernelSU officially supports Android GKI 2.0 devices (kernel 5.10+). Older kernels (4.14+) are also supported, but the kernel will need to be built manually.

With this, WSA, ChromeOS, and container-based Android are all supported.

Currently, the arm64-v8a and x86_64 architectures are supported.

[!CAUTION] Recent kernel versions have implemented a breaking change causing KernelSU to fail and potentially trigger a kernel panic on x86_64! Check the website for more info!

What is this?KernelSU is a kernel-based root solution for Android devices: the su and root access management run inside the kernel itself.
So is it just an app, or does it go deeper into the system?Something deeper: su and root management are part of the Android kernel, so the device must run a kernel with KernelSU built in; a separate manager app on top is used to control root.
How do I install it on my phone?Through the Installation guide on the official website linked from the README's Usage section. GKI 2.0 phones (kernel 5.10+) are the supported path; older kernels (4.14+) work too, but you have to build the kernel yourself.
Anything that can go wrong if I install it?Yes — recent kernel versions introduced a breaking change that makes KernelSU fail on x86_64 and can potentially trigger a kernel panic. The website has details, so check your kernel version first.
Does it only run on phones? No — besides Android phones it also runs on WSA, ChromeOS, and container-based Android. Supported CPU architectures are arm64-v8a and x86_64.
Does it support systemless modifications?Yes — the module system is built on metamodules, a pluggable infrastructure for systemless modifications, so modules can alter the system without permanently modifying it.
Can I control how much root power each app gets?Yes — the App Profile feature is designed to lock root power 'in a cage', so you can restrict what rooted apps are allowed to do instead of handing out unrestricted access.
What inspired the kernel-based approach? The credits name Kernel-Assisted Superuser as the source of the idea, Magisk as the powerful root tool, and Diamorphine as the origin of some rootkit skills.
