What is this?
This is Telegram Desktop, the official desktop client of the Telegram messenger. The repository holds its complete source code and build instructions, written in C++.
Do I install Telegram from this repository, or is it just for developers?
If you only want the app, just download a ready build. The repository itself is the source code and build instructions - for people who want to compile the client themselves or see how it works.
How do I get the app on my computer?
Grab a build for your OS: portable Windows versions for Windows 7 and above (32- and 64-bit), macOS 10.13 and above, a static 64-bit Linux build, or Snap and Flatpak packages on Linux.
Will it run on an older Mac or an older Linux distribution?
The latest builds need newer systems: macOS 10.13 and above on the Mac side. For older machines the last supported release is 4.9.9, which still covers macOS 10.12 and Linux with glibc.
Is the connection secure - what does the client use to talk to Telegram?
It is built on the Telegram API and the MTProto secure protocol, the same secure protocol Telegram's official clients use.
Is the code free to use and modify?
Yes - the source is published under GPLv3 with an OpenSSL exception, so you can study, modify and redistribute it under those terms.
Is there a Windows version that runs without installation?
Yes - both the 32-bit and 64-bit Windows builds are portable, so you can run Telegram Desktop straight away without going through an installer.
Why would I open this repository at all if I can just download Telegram?
To build the official client yourself, read how a production desktop messenger is written, or fix a bug and propose the change - the complete source and build instructions are all here.
