Installation

Windows 🪟

Linux 🐧

Linux has several options available - Flatpak, AppImage and Snap. Flatpak is recommended. For arm processors, download from flathub.

macOS 🍎

Since the app is not signed, when you will try to open the app, macOS will not allow you to open it.

You need to open terminal and execute:

sudo xattr -r -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/YTDownloader.app

You will also need to install yt-dlp with homebrew

brew install yt-dlp

Internationalization (Localization) 🌍

Translations into other languages would be highly appreciated. If you want to help translating the app to other languages, you can join from here. Open a new issue and that language will be added to Crowdin. Please don't make pull requests with json files, instead use Crowdin.

Used technologies

For building or running from source code

Nodejs (along with npm) needs to be installed.

Required commands to get started.

git clone https://github.com/aandrew-me/ytDownloader.git
cd ytDownloader
npm i

To run with Electron :

npm start

You need to download ffmpeg and put it in the root directory of the project. If you don't need to build for arm processor, you can download ffmpeg by executing any of the files - linux.sh / mac.sh / windows.sh depending on the platform. Otherwise you need to download ffmpeg from here for windows/linux and from here for mac (not tested)

To build for Linux (It will create packages as specified in package.json). The builds are stored in release folder.

npm run linux

To build for Windows

npm run windows

To build for macOS

npm run mac

If you only want to build for one format, you can do

npx electron-builder -l appimage

It will just create a linux appimage build.

What is this?ytDownloader is a desktop app with a graphical interface for downloading video and audio from the web — no command line needed.
Is this a website I visit, or a program I install? It's a desktop program built with Electron and Node.js that runs on your own machine; under the hood yt-dlp and ffmpeg do the downloading and media work.
How do I install it on my system?Windows: Microsoft Store, an exe/msi installer, or Chocolatey, Scoop and Winget. Linux: Flatpak (recommended), AppImage or Snap. macOS: download the app and prepare it from the terminal.
Do I need to install yt-dlp or ffmpeg first? The only manual step the README mentions is on macOS: install yt-dlp with Homebrew. Otherwise nothing extra — the app is built on yt-dlp and ffmpeg.
Are there any gotchas when first launching it?Yes. Windows Defender may show a 'Windows Protected Your PC' warning (choose More info, then Run anyway), and the unsigned macOS build needs a terminal command before macOS lets you open it.
Is it free, and will I run into ads or tracking? It's free under GPL-3.0, and the README promises no trackers or ads.
Which sites can it download from?Hundreds of sites — the README names YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Twitter among others. Since it runs on yt-dlp, most sites that yt-dlp supports should work.
What languages is the interface translated into?Over 20, including English, Spanish, French, German, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Japanese, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Portuguese (Brazil), Turkish and Ukrainian. Translations are managed through Crowdin.
Does the app update itself? The Linux AppImage has built-in auto-update support. The README doesn't describe update behavior for the other install options.
What are similar projects?ytdlnis, Seal, yt-dlp, YoutubeDownloader, ISpotify, VidBee, stemkit, vdl
