picasso README

The project's README from github.com/square/picasso. As one markdown file: README.md.

Picasso

Attention: This library is deprecated. Please use alternatives like Coil for future projects, and start planning to migrate existing projects, especially if they rely on Compose UI. Existing versions will continue to function, but no new work is planned. While some changes may land in the repo as we support internal legacy usage and migration, there will be no more public releases to Maven Central.

Thank you to all who used and/or contributed to Picasso over its decade of image loading.

What is this?Picasso is an image downloading and caching library for Android, built by Square to simplify loading images from network, resources, or disk into views.
Is it a library or a standalone app?It is a library you add to an Android app via Gradle or Maven, not a standalone application.
How do I add it to my Android project?Download the latest AAR from Maven Central, or add it as a Gradle or Maven dependency.
What minimum Java and Android API version does it need?Picasso requires at minimum Java 8 and Android API level 21.
Is this library still being actively developed? No. Picasso is deprecated, there will be no more public releases to Maven Central, and the author recommends migrating to an alternative like Coil, especially for Compose UI projects.
Will my existing app break if it already uses Picasso? No, existing versions will continue to function, but you should not plan new feature work or releases around it.
Does this only work on Android?Yes, it is specifically an Android library.
Do I need to configure anything special for ProGuard?Yes, if you use ProGuard you may need to add OkHttp's ProGuard rules, since Picasso relies on OkHttp under the hood.
Why is it deprecated instead of just unmaintained silently?Square explicitly announced the deprecation in the README to redirect new and existing projects toward actively maintained alternatives like Coil, particularly for Compose-based UIs.
Should I start a new project with Picasso today? No, given the explicit deprecation notice, new projects should use an actively maintained alternative such as Coil instead.
