taxonomy README

The project's README from github.com/shadcn-ui/taxonomy. As one markdown file: README.md.

[!NOTE] This project has been officially archived and will no longer receive updates. See the Templates directory for Next.js starters.

I started this project when the Next.js App Router was in public preview. Because the framework has since stabilized and undergone significant architectural changes, the code in this repository:

  • Does not reflect current best practices.
  • May contain deprecated APIs or patterns.
  • Is not recommended for use in production environments.

Taxonomy

An open source application built using the new router, server components and everything new in Next.js 13.

About this project

This project as an experiment to see how a modern app (with features like authentication, subscriptions, API routes, static pages for docs ...etc) would work in Next.js 13 and server components.

Known Issues

A list of things not working right now:

  1. GitHub authentication (use email)
  2. Prisma: Error: ENOENT: no such file or directory, open '/var/task/.next/server/chunks/schema.prisma'
  3. Next.js 13: Client side navigation does not update head
  4. Cannot use opengraph-image.tsx inside catch-all routes

Why not tRPC, Turborepo or X?

I might add this later. For now, I want to see how far we can get using Next.js only.

If you have some suggestions, feel free to create an issue.

Running Locally

  1. Install dependencies using pnpm:
pnpm install
  1. Copy .env.example to .env.local and update the variables.
cp .env.example .env.local
  1. Start the development server:
pnpm dev

What is this?It is an open source demo app showing how a modern product — with authentication, subscriptions, docs and a blog — comes together on Next.js 13's new app router and server components.
Is this a library I install or a complete app?A complete application you run and explore, not a package you add to a project: one TypeScript codebase with marketing pages, docs, a blog, auth and Stripe subscriptions.
How do I get it running locally?Clone the repo, run pnpm install, copy .env.example to .env.local and fill in the variables, then start the dev server — the dev script runs Contentlayer and Next.js together.
What external services does it need to work?A PlanetScale MySQL database behind Prisma, NextAuth.js for sign-in and Stripe for subscriptions; Radix UI, Tailwind CSS, Zod and MDX ship in the repo itself.
Can I use this as a starting point for a new project today? Not really — it is officially archived and no longer updated. The README warns the code predates the stable App Router, may use deprecated APIs and is not recommended for production.
What does the codebase actually demonstrate?App Router routing, nested layouts and layout groups, server and client components, data fetching and caching, route handlers and API routes with middleware, plus MDX-based docs and a blog built on Contentlayer. The UI is Radix components styled with Tailwind, validated with Zod, with dark mode included.
Why did the author build it with Next.js alone? As an experiment to see how far plain Next.js could go — tRPC and Turborepo were deliberately left out, with the author open to adding them later.
Anything known to be broken in the demo? One known issue remains: opengraph-image.tsx cannot be used inside catch-all routes. Earlier problems, like GitHub authentication and a Prisma schema error, were already resolved.
