What is this?Sequelize is a promise-based ORM for Node.js and TypeScript: you describe your tables as models in code and it handles the database work for you.
Is it a library I add to my app, or a separate program I run?A library: you install it into a Node.js or TypeScript project and use it from your code. A separate CLI exists alongside it, but the core is the library your app depends on.
How do I get started with it?Head to sequelize.org — the Getting Started guide walks you through your first project, with separate guides for Sequelize 6 and the newer v7.
Is the newest major version ready for production use?Not yet — v7 is still an alpha. Sequelize 6 is the stable release, so production apps should stay on v6 for now.
I use GraphQL or CockroachDB — is there anything for me?Yes. The README's Tools section lists dedicated integrations for GraphQL, CockroachDB and YugabyteDB, alongside Awesome Sequelize for community-curated resources.
Why is the team asking for new maintainers? They want help finalizing and releasing the next major version, improving TypeScript support and database integrations, and fixing critical issues. Funding is available: $2,500 per quarter is distributed among maintainers, with additional funds for full-time contributions.
How do I handle major version upgrades? The README links upgrade guides for each step — v5 to v6 and v6 to v7 — so you can plan the move once the v7 alpha stabilizes.
