What is this?
A collection of 1,898 classic Chinese DOS games, playable directly in the browser. The project hosts the game files themselves and links to a website built around them.
So is it a website to play on, or an archive to download from?
Both: the games play on the project's website, and the repo stores the raw game files. The website's source code lives in a separate repo, rwv/chinese-dos-games-web.
How do I get a game running?
Open the site and click a game — it runs in the browser. To grab files locally, run the Python 3 script in the repo root; if a download fails, check Issue #26.
Do I need to install DOSBox or another emulator first?
No separate emulator needed — games run through an Emscripten port of DOSBox (em-dosbox) with the Emularity embedded-emulator loader, all inside the browser.
Is distributing these games actually legal?
The author states openly that the project infringes copyright and will delete files if rights holders object (contact: [email protected]).
Does it matter what OS I'm on?
Any OS with a modern browser — Windows, macOS or Linux — since the games are compiled to run in the browser via Emscripten.
What's the IPNS hash in the README for?
The whole collection is mirrored on IPFS under that IPNS name (k2k4r8oyknzob8jjqpj6toer4dw3jc6srsbqlbsalktnw1fopb7iyqd2), so a decentralized copy of the games stays reachable.
Where did the games originally come from?
The DOS games compilation was assembled by 衡兰若芷 (Heng Lan Ruo Zhi); this project packages it for browser play and accepts issues and PRs to add more games.
