RealWorld Example Applications

Frontend and Backend Frameworks

See how the exact same Medium.com clone is built using different frontends and backends

You can combine any frontend with any backend, because they all adhere to the same API spec

While most "todo" demos provide an excellent cursory glance at a framework's capabilities, they typically don't convey the knowledge required to actually build real applications with it — nor the real-world constraints a minimal demo never has to face.

RealWorld solves this problem by providing the same demo app for each framework, at a sweet spot between simplicity and breadth.

What is this?RealWorld is a project that builds the exact same Medium.com-style blogging app over and over using different frontend and backend frameworks (React, Angular, Node, Django and 100+ more), so developers can compare how real frameworks handle a realistic app instead of a trivial todo demo.
Is this a single app or a collection of implementations? It is a catalog of over 100 separate frontend and backend implementations, not one app. Any frontend can be paired with any backend because they all follow the same shared API spec.
How do I try one of the implementations?Browse implementations on CodebaseShow and pick any frontend/backend pair to run locally, or use the public hosted demo at demo.realworld.show, which talks to a public backend API with no API keys needed.
Do all the listed implementations pass the same tests?Only a couple of backends, Nitro+Prisma+Zod (TypeScript) and Django Ninja (Python), are confirmed to pass the full API spec test suite; not every community-submitted implementation is guaranteed to be fully spec-compliant.
Is it safe to use the public hosted demo with my own account data?Yes, the hosted demo uses demo accounts and the setup is designed so real accounts cannot see each other's data.
What is CodebaseShow?CodebaseShow is the companion site that catalogs all RealWorld implementations, letting you browse and compare frontends and backends side by side.
How do I add my own implementation? You build it against the shared API spec and shared CSS theme, then follow the starter guide to get it listed as an official implementation.
Do all frontend implementations look the same?Yes, a shared CSS theme is provided so every frontend implementation can share identical UI/UX regardless of the framework used.
How many implementations are there?Over 100 implementations have been built across a wide range of languages, libraries, and frameworks.
