What is this?Piskel is an easy-to-use, web-based sprite editor for creating game sprites, animations, and pixel art.
Do I use this in the browser or install a desktop app? It's primarily a browser tool - the same editor runs live at piskelapp.com - but offline/desktop builds are also available if you want to use it without a browser.
How do I start using Piskel?Easiest is to open the hosted editor at piskelapp.com with no install needed; to run it yourself, clone the repo and build it with npm, or download one of the offline builds.
Which browsers does it actually support?Piskel officially supports the latest Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Brave, though on Brave you need to disable canvas fingerprinting protection for it to work.
Does it work on my phone or tablet? No, Piskel has no mobile or tablet support and is built for desktop browser use only.
Can I export my animations as GIFs?Yes, Piskel bundles the gifjs library to generate animated GIFs directly in the browser using web workers, and jszip to export project files as zip archives.
Can I import an existing GIF to edit its frames?Yes, Piskel includes a modified version of SuperGif to parse and import GIF files so you can edit them frame by frame.
What is Piskel built with under the hood? It's written purely in JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, using small libraries like spectrum for color picking, canvas-toBlob as a canvas shim, and jQuery and Bootstrap tooltips for parts of the UI.
