Welcome to learn Talent Plan Courses!

Talent Plan Logo

Talent Plan is an open source training program initiated by PingCAP. It aims to create or combine some open source learning materials for people interested in open source, distributed systems, Rust, Golang, and other infrastructure knowledge. As such, it provides a series of courses focused on open source collaboration, rust programming, distributed database and systems.

Note:

Each course is developed by different teams, so they may vary in their organization and learning outcomes. Please see the individual course documentation for details.

Our Courses

Series 1: Open Source Collaboration

Open source collaboration includes a series of open-source related learning materials to help enthusiasts gain basic knowledge of what open source software is, the differences between existing open-source software licenses, how to participate in open source projects, and what a welcoming open source community looks like.

Courses include:

Series 2: Rust Programming

This series is core to TALENT-PLAN. It builds your understanding of Rust as a programming language and provides opportunities for you to practice with it.

Courses include:

Series 3: Distributed Database

This series provides information on TinySQL and TinyKV, which are distributed databases in Go.

Courses include:

Series 4: Deep Dive into TiDB Ecosystems

This series provides information on TiDB and TiKV, which are distributed databases developed by PingCAP.

Courses include:

See Courses for more details.

Searching Database…

What is this?An open source training program initiated by PingCAP: a set of courses on open source collaboration, Rust programming, distributed systems and distributed databases.
What does a course here actually look like — videos, text, coding projects? It varies: each course is built by a different team, so the organization and outcomes differ. For example, TP 201 is a series of hands-on projects, while TP 202 is adapted from MIT 6.824 coursework.
Is there anything to install from this repo before I start learning? No — this repo is the program overview. Pick a course and follow its own documentation, e.g. TP 201 if you want the hands-on Rust track.
Do I need any prior knowledge or tools before taking a course? The README lists no prerequisites — the Rust series even builds your understanding of Rust itself. Each course team documents its own requirements in that course's docs.
Is the whole program finished, or are parts still being written? Not everything is done: TP 401 (Deep Dive into TiDB) and TP 402 (Deep Dive into TiKV) are both marked as WIP.
Do I need to already know distributed systems, or does it start from the basics? It targets people interested in open source, distributed systems, Rust, Golang and infrastructure, and Series 1 starts from zero — what open source is, how to use Git and GitHub, how communities work.
Can I reuse these materials for my own study group or company training?Yes — the courses may be freely used and modified for any purpose, but each course carries its own individual license, so check the specific course for the exact terms.
Which programming languages will I use in these courses?Depends on the track: TP 201 and TP 202 are Rust courses, while TinySQL (TP 301) and TinyKV (TP 302) are written and taught in Go.
What do I actually build in the Rust series?TP 201 incrementally grows one project from the ground up into a high-performance, networked, parallel and asynchronous key/value store. TP 202, adapted from MIT 6.824, has you implement the Raft consensus algorithm and the Percolator distributed transaction protocol.
What are TinySQL and TinyKV?Two distributed databases in Go built for learning: TinySQL is a distributed relational database and TinyKV a distributed key-value database, used to teach how distributed databases work.
Is this tied to TiDB in any way?Yes — PingCAP, the company behind the TiDB and TiKV databases, initiated the program, and Series 4 is a set of deep dives into exactly those databases (still in progress).
