What is this?
This is the FFmpeg School of Assembly Language — a free course that teaches how assembly language (including SIMD code) is written inside FFmpeg, so you understand what's actually happening in your computer at the hardware level.
Is this a structured course, or just a collection of notes?
It's a structured, ordered sequence of lessons stored in a Git repository, each paired with its own assignment, meant to be worked through step by step rather than used as a reference you dip into randomly.
Where should I start?
There's no install step — just clone or browse the repository and work through the lessons in order starting from Lesson 1.
Do I need to already know assembly before starting?
No, but you do need working knowledge of C (especially pointers) and basic high-school math like scalar-vs-vector arithmetic; if you don't know C yet, the README points you to 'The C Programming Language' book first.
Are the lesson assignments ready to use right now?
Not fully — the lesson text is there, but the accompanying assignments for each lesson haven't been uploaded yet.
What will I be able to do after finishing the lessons?
The course is designed so that by the end you'll be able to contribute real assembly code to the FFmpeg project itself.
Is the course available in languages other than English?
Yes, it has also been translated into French, Spanish, Turkish, and Chinese.
