What is this?OnTheSpot is a free, open-source music downloader written in Python. It pulls tracks from streaming services like Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, Deezer, Qobuz and Bandcamp.
Is it a GUI app or a command-line tool? All three: it ships a desktop GUI, a CLI, and a Web UI frontend, so you can pick whichever way you prefer to drive your downloads.
How do I get it running?Download the app from the GitHub releases page or run the install command shown in the README; an Installation Guide and Basic Usage Instructions are linked right below.
Is there any risk to my streaming account? One user reported a locked Spotify account, which was returned after emailing support. The project asks you to stay within private, educational and fair use and disclaims responsibility for misuse.
Which operating systems does it run on?Windows, macOS and Linux. The GUI and CLI run on the desktop, while the Web UI opens in a browser.
How is OnTheSpot different from similar music downloaders?Unlike similar projects, it sources downloaded files and metadata directly from the streaming service you choose, rather than pulling them from third-party providers.
Does it download only music, or video too?Music is the core focus, but the repo topics also list YouTube and Crunchyroll downloaders alongside the music services, so video sources are covered as well.
Is the project still actively maintained? The repository is not archived, was created in August 2024, and has around 1.8k stars — a relatively young and alive project.
