SRS(Simple Realtime Server)

SRS/8.0 (Free) is a simple, high-performance, AI-driven real-time media server. It supports RTMP, WebRTC, HLS, HTTP-FLV, SRT, MPEG-DASH, and GB28181 on Linux and macOS across x86_64, ARMv7, AArch64, Apple M1, RISC-V, LoongArch, and MIPS architectures. Supported codecs include H.264, H.265, AV1, VP9, AAC, Opus, and G.711. See the complete list of features.

SRS Overview

Note: For more details on the single-node architecture for SRS, please visit the following link.

SRS is licenced under MIT, and some third-party libraries are distributed under their licenses.

Usage

Please check the Getting Started guide in English or Chinese. We highly recommend using SRS with docker:

docker run --rm -it -p 1935:1935 -p 1985:1985 -p 8080:8080 \
    -p 8000:8000/udp -p 10080:10080/udp ossrs/srs:6

Tips: If you're in China, use this image registry.cn-hangzhou.aliyuncs.com/ossrs/srs:6 for faster speed.

Open http://localhost:8080/ to verify, and then stream using the following FFmpeg command:

ffmpeg -re -i ./doc/source.flv -c copy -f flv -y rtmp://localhost/live/livestream

Alternatively, stream by OBS using the following configuration:

Play the following streams using media players:

If you'd like to use WebRTC, convert RTMP to WebRTC, or convert WebRTC to RTMP, please check out the wiki documentation in either English or Chinese.

To learn more about RTMP, HLS, HTTP-FLV, SRT, MPEG-DASH, WebRTC protocols, clustering, HTTP API, DVR, and transcoding, please check the documents in English or Chinese.

What is this?SRS (Simple Realtime Server) is a simple, high-performance, AI-driven real-time media server for live streaming: RTMP, WebRTC, HLS, HTTP-FLV, SRT, MPEG-DASH, and GB28181, with codecs from H.264 to AV1, VP9, AAC, Opus, and G.711.
Is it a hosted service, or do I run it myself? It is self-hosted, not a cloud service: SRS is an open-source server you run on your own machine (Docker is the recommended way), and your streams flow through your own server only.
How do I get it running?Run the Docker image ossrs/srs:6 — in China pull registry.cn-hangzhou.aliyuncs.com/ossrs/srs:6 for faster speed — then publish a test stream with FFmpeg or OBS to rtmp://localhost/live, stream key livestream.
What do I need to actually stream and watch something?Just Docker for the server itself. To publish, any RTMP source such as FFmpeg or OBS; to watch, VLC or the HTML5-based srs-player web page — no plugins needed.
Does it run on Windows, or just Linux? No Windows build: the README lists Linux and macOS, across x86_64, ARMv7, AArch64 (Apple M1 included), RISC-V, LoongArch, and MIPS CPUs.
Live media servers are often GPL — what can I do with SRS's code?MIT, so commercial use, modification, and self-hosting are unrestricted. Caveat: some bundled third-party libraries are distributed under their own licenses.
What else can it do besides serving streams? It converts RTMP to WebRTC and back, and the docs cover clustering for scaling out, an HTTP API for control, DVR recording, and transcoding.
What does the AI-driven part actually mean?SRS publishes an AI Agent wiki with guidance on using AI assistants to understand and maintain your SRS deployment — the README recommends working this way.
Is this a mature project or a weekend experiment?Mature: created in October 2013, around 29k stars on GitHub, still releasing steadily — v6.0-r1 and a v7.0 dev line were both tagged in August 2026.
