What is this?FFmpeg is a collection of libraries and command-line tools to process multimedia: decode, encode, transcode, mux, demux, stream, filter and play audio and video.
Is this a set of libraries, or just the ffmpeg command-line tool? Both: it ships several libraries (libavcodec, libavformat, libavutil, libavfilter, libavdevice, libswresample, libswscale) plus command-line tools like ffmpeg, ffplay and ffprobe.
How do I build or install it?It's built from source using the standard configure/make workflow; detailed build instructions are in the doc/ directory and the project wiki.
Do I need any special compiler or toolchain to build it?The repo includes Make-based build files (configure + Makefile); no other language runtime deps are declared in the README itself, since it's a C codebase.
What codecs and formats does it support? It supports a very wide range through libavcodec and libavformat, including modern codecs like HEVC and containers/protocols like MP4, Matroska, WebM, HLS, RTMP and RTSP (per the repo topics).
What are ffplay and ffprobe for?ffplay is a minimalistic multimedia player for quickly previewing media, and ffprobe is an analysis tool used to inspect the streams, codecs and metadata of a multimedia file.
Can I use FFmpeg's filters to edit video, like cropping or overlaying?Yes, libavfilter lets you build a directed graph of connected filters to alter decoded audio and video, which covers tasks like cropping, scaling, and overlaying.
Where are code examples if I want to use the libraries directly?Coding examples demonstrating how to use the FFmpeg libraries are provided in the doc/examples directory.
