OpenTF Manifesto

OpenTF's goal is to ensure Terraform remains truly open source and proposes returning it to a fully open license. We urge HashiCorp to reconsider and switch Terraform back to an open source license, avoiding fragmentation of the community.

For further details and the full text of the manifesto, you can visit the OpenTF website.

The OpenTF fork

The OpenTF repo is now publicly available at https://github.com/opentffoundation/opentf. For more context on the current status of the fork, the roadmap, and the path to a stable release, see https://opentf.org/fork.

What is this? This is the OpenTF Manifesto, a public document and petition opposing HashiCorp's move of Terraform's license away from open source, calling for it to be switched back to a truly open source license.
Is this something I install, or just a document to read?It is not software you run - it is a text manifesto published as a static HTML page (built with Jekyll and deployed via GitHub Pages). There is no code or application to install.
How do I 'use' this? You just read the manifesto in this repo, or visit the linked OpenTF website for the full text and context on the fork that resulted from it.
Is this project still active? No, the repository is archived. It served its purpose as a 2023 protest document; the actual code fork it sparked went on to become the OpenTofu project.
What came out of this manifesto? It triggered a public fork of Terraform called OpenTF, which was later renamed and donated to the Linux Foundation as the OpenTofu project.
Why was this manifesto written in the first place?HashiCorp switched Terraform's license from open source to the Business Source License, and the community behind this manifesto saw that as a betrayal of open source principles, so they organized this public pledge demanding a reversal.
How is this different from the actual OpenTofu/Terraform code? This repository only contains the petition text itself; the real open source fork of Terraform lives in a separate codebase that eventually became the OpenTofu project.
How can I contact the people behind this manifesto? You can email the team at [email protected].
