Libron

Libron is a modified version of Readerly with various edits to give the font a more neutral look.

The original font was imported and has been manually edited using FontForge. All modified source files are available in the src directory.

General changes

Libron started as an attempt to make Readerly feel a little more appropriate for reading on e-readers. Some of the more expressive details that are part of Readerly stood out more than I wanted.

In particular, some of the serifs and capital forms seemed too distracting as I was reading.

What started as a few tweaks to the serifs to make the different font files a little more neutral has gradually developed into a broader reworking of Readerly's design:

The result keeps Readerly's proportions and overall character, but has a calmer and more neutral appearance intended specifically for reading books. As such, it is a successor to Readerly.

Building Libron

Automatic builds

When a commit of Libron is tagged, a version is automatically released. The version number set in VERSION is used when building the font, and is embedded within the font.

The following variants are generated:

Libron for devices running CrossPoint Reader (cpfont) is built and published in ebook-fonts.

Building locally

You can run ./local-build.sh if you have Podman installed to build the definitive fonts. If you have all dependencies installed locally, you can also use ./build.py to build the font with Python.

作者为什么要改造 Readerly，而不是直接拿来用？Readerly 的一些富于表现力的衬线和大写字母形态在阅读时显得太抢眼，因此作者重新打磨了字形、字距和字偶间距，让这款字体更适合图书阅读，更沉稳、更中性。
Libron 的外观和 Readerly 完全不同吗？不是。它保留了 Readerly 的整体比例和气质，只是重新绘制了字母、调整了字距/字偶间距、重建了带变音符的字符，并在全部四个样式中新增了合成小型大写字母。
新版本是怎么发布的？当提交被打上标签时，会使用存储在 VERSION 文件中的版本号自动构建发布，该版本号会嵌入到生成的字体文件中。
