What is this?Yaak is a free, open-source desktop API client for firing off REST, GraphQL, WebSocket, Server-Sent Events, and gRPC requests — a privacy-first alternative to Postman, Insomnia, and Bruno.
Is this something I use in the browser, or a real desktop app?A real desktop app for macOS, Windows, and Linux, built with Tauri — a Rust backend with a React frontend. It is not a web app; everything runs on your machine.
How do I get it on my machine?Install the prebuilt desktop app for macOS, Windows, or Linux; the repo also packages a Flatpak build for Linux. To build from source, run 'npm install && npm run bootstrap', then 'npm start' for the dev client.
Does it send my requests or data to some cloud, or is it all local? It is offline-first: no telemetry, no cloud lock-in, and no account needed. Sensitive values can be secured as encrypted secrets and stored in your OS keychain.
Can I import my existing collections from Postman or Insomnia?Yes — you can import collections from Postman, Insomnia, OpenAPI, Swagger, or Curl, so switching over does not mean rebuilding your requests by hand.
What about authentication — can it handle OAuth flows and API tokens? It ships with OAuth 2.0, JWT, and Basic Auth built in, and custom plugins can add other authentication schemes. Sensitive values stay encrypted in your OS keychain.
How do I manage dev, staging, and prod without editing every request?Use environment variables to switch between dev, staging, and prod, group requests into workspaces and nested folders, and optionally mirror a workspace to your filesystem for versioning in Git or syncing with Dropbox.
Can I customize it with themes or plugins?Yes — pick from built-in themes or build your own, and write plugins that extend authentication, template tags, or the UI. Template tags insert dynamic values like UUIDs or timestamps into requests.
