Letta

Build stateful agents with memory that can learn and improve over time.

Letta (f.k.a. MemGPT) is actively developed. The current source code lives in letta-ai/letta-code, which includes the agent harness, interactive terminal UI, App Server, channels, and the runtime used by the desktop and web apps.

Get started

Install Letta from npm:

npm install -g @letta-ai/letta-code

Launch the interactive terminal UI:

letta

Run the App Server for local or self-hosted agents:

letta server

You can also use Letta through:

See the Letta documentation for current installation, development, and deployment instructions.

Historical source

The archive branch contains the retired Letta V1 API server. Existing tags and releases remain available for reproducibility, but active projects should use the current source.

What is this?Letta is a platform for building stateful AI agents with advanced memory that lets them learn and improve over time; it's the actively developed successor to MemGPT.
Is this a library I embed, or a full platform? It's a full platform: the core source includes the agent harness, an interactive terminal UI, and an App Server, plus desktop and web apps, with an SDK available for embedding agents into your own TypeScript applications.
How do I get it running?Install Letta from npm, then launch the interactive terminal UI, or run the App Server if you want to serve agents locally or self-hosted.
Do I need Node.js and npm first?Yes — Letta is distributed as an npm package, so you need Node.js and npm installed before you can run the CLI or App Server.
Is this the same as the old MemGPT project I may have heard of?Yes, Letta is the renamed continuation of MemGPT; the original Letta V1 API server has been retired into a separate archive branch for reference only, and new work should use the current source.
Can I use Letta without installing anything myself?Yes, you can chat with agents directly at chat.letta.com in a browser (including on mobile), or interact through Slack, Telegram, Discord, or custom channels without running your own server.
Is there a desktop app?Yes, Letta ships a desktop app for macOS, Windows, and Linux in addition to the web and terminal options.
What does Letta Cloud add over self-hosting?Letta Cloud keeps an agent's memory, identity, and conversation history available across different computers automatically, which you'd otherwise have to manage yourself when self-hosting the App Server.
Can I build agents directly into my own app?Yes, the Letta Agent SDK lets you build and embed agents into TypeScript applications rather than only using the standalone terminal UI or App Server.
What makes a 'stateful' agent different from a normal LLM chat?A stateful agent retains and manages its own memory across sessions so it can learn and self-improve over time, instead of starting fresh on every conversation like a stateless LLM call.
