Qwen Code in the terminal, desktop app, browser, editor, and chat, with VS Code, Zed, JetBrains, Telegram, DingTalk, WeChat, and Feishu integrations

Why Qwen Code?

[!TIP] Qwen Code is actively iterating on itself — using its own agent and models to file issues, submit PRs, review code, and run tests. Powered by the community, driven by AI.

Installation

Linux / macOS:

curl -fsSL https://qwen-code-assets.oss-cn-hangzhou.aliyuncs.com/installation/install-qwen-standalone.sh | bash

Windows:

irm https://qwen-code-assets.oss-cn-hangzhou.aliyuncs.com/installation/install-qwen-standalone.ps1 | iex

Restart your terminal after installation to ensure environment variables take effect.

NPM / Homebrew

NPM (requires Node.js 22+):

npm install -g @qwen-code/qwen-code@latest

Homebrew (macOS / Linux):

brew install qwen-code

Quick Start

Open a terminal in your project and start Qwen Code:

cd /path/to/your-project
qwen

Inside the session, run /auth to configure your provider and API key. Then try:

How to Use Qwen Code

Choose the interface that fits your workflow:

Interface Get started
Terminal Run qwen in your project — see Quick Start.
Desktop Download Qwen Code Desktop for macOS, Windows, and Linux.
Web Run qwen serve --open to open the Web UI in your browser. (experimental)
Editor Set up VS Code, Zed, or JetBrains.
Chat Connect Telegram, DingTalk, WeChat, or Feishu, then run qwen channel start.

For automation and custom integrations:

SDK example (Python)
import asyncio

from qwen_code_sdk import is_sdk_result_message, query

async def main() -> None:
    result = query(
        "Summarize the repository layout.",
        {
            "cwd": "/path/to/project",
            "path_to_qwen_executable": "qwen",
        },
    )

    async for message in result:
        if is_sdk_result_message(message):
            print(message["result"])

asyncio.run(main())

Capabilities

If you know Claude Code, you already know Qwen Code — and then some. We've put significant effort into bringing Qwen Code to feature parity with Claude Code, improving both breadth and reliability across the board.

Ecosystem

Use Qwen Code as a coding agent. First, fetch and read this skill reference:
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/QwenLM/qwen-code/refs/heads/main/.qwen/skills/qwen-code-claw/SKILL.md
Then follow the instructions inside to install, authenticate, and use Qwen Code via acpx for all coding tasks.

Contributing

Contributions are welcome! See CONTRIBUTING.md for guidelines.

Acknowledgments

This project was originally based on Google Gemini CLI v0.8.2. We gratefully acknowledge the Gemini CLI team's excellent work. Starting from Qwen Code v0.1, we stopped syncing with upstream and began independent development as a multi-protocol, multi-platform agent framework with deep integrations for Qwen models and beyond.

What is this?An open-source AI coding agent that lives in your terminal — it edits code and runs commands in your project, powered by Qwen, OpenAI, Anthropic, or Gemini APIs, or local models via Ollama and vLLM.
Is it a terminal-only tool, or does it run anywhere else?Terminal first — run qwen in your project — plus a desktop app for macOS, Windows, and Linux, a Web UI, IDE plugins for VS Code, Zed, and JetBrains, and chat integrations (Telegram, DingTalk, WeChat, Feishu).
How do I get it installed and running?Install with npm (needs Node.js 22+), Homebrew, or the install script — on Windows, restart your terminal afterwards. Then run qwen in your project and use /auth to set your provider and API key.
Do I have to use Qwen models, or can I plug in other providers?No vendor lock-in: /auth configures Qwen, OpenAI, Anthropic, or Gemini APIs, any third-party provider, or a local model via Ollama or vLLM — and you can switch providers at runtime.
What's still experimental or rough around the edges?The Web UI and the qwen serve daemon mode are marked experimental. On Windows you must restart your terminal after install so environment variables take effect.
I already use Claude Code — what does this give me that Claude Code doesn't?It's built to match Claude Code feature-for-feature — subagents, skills, MCP, plan mode, sandboxes — and adds open models and framework, multi-protocol providers, Agent Arena, daemon mode, and IM channels.
Is the whole thing actually open source, or just the wrapper?Fully open: Apache-2.0 code, and the Qwen models are open too — framework and models evolve together with no vendor lock-in. Hosted provider APIs still cost whatever those providers charge.
How well does it do on SWE-bench Verified?Across seven versions tested on all 500 SWE-bench Verified cases with Qwen 3.7 Max, average scores stay in the 76–78% band with pass rates of 83–85% (0.0.14 scored 77.80% avg, 84.6% pass rate).
Why build a new agent when Gemini CLI already exists?It originally forked Google Gemini CLI v0.8.2, but from v0.1 the team stopped syncing upstream and went independent as a multi-protocol, multi-platform agent framework with deep Qwen integrations.
What does it do out of the box, agent-wise?Auto-Memory, Auto-Skills, SubAgents, Agent Teams, dynamic workflows, MCP, plan mode, LSP integration, git worktrees, sandboxing, and desktop automation (computer use) — zero setup, per the README.
Does the project use itself to develop itself?Yes — the README says Qwen Code actively iterates on itself: its own agent and models file issues, submit PRs, review code, and run tests, powered by the community.
