What is this?A curated collection of modern, faster and saner alternatives to common Unix commands - an index of CLI tools like bat, ripgrep, fd, fzf and zoxide.
Is Modern Unix itself a tool I install, or just a list?Just a list - nothing here gets installed. It's an index of independent open-source tools, each with a one-line pitch; you browse it and try whatever sounds useful.
How do I actually get one of these tools onto my machine? The list doesn't ship binaries - every entry links to the tool's own repo, where that project documents its own install method.
Any catch before I swap out my classic commands? Some are drop-in - lsd is backwards compatible with ls - while others, like broot, rethink the interface entirely. They're all third-party tools, so behavior can differ from the classics.
Which tools should I try first?Start with ripgrep (a very fast grep that respects your gitignore), fd (a friendly alternative to find), fzf (a general-purpose fuzzy finder), zoxide (a smarter cd) and lazygit (a terminal UI for git commands).
Do these alternatives run outside Linux? The list targets Unix shells, but several picks are cross-platform - Glances monitors GNU/Linux, BSD, Mac OS and Windows, and bottom is a cross-platform graphical process monitor.
Is it only file and text tools, or more?More: it also covers system monitoring (Glances, bottom, gping), benchmarking with hyperfine, HTTP clients like curlie and xh, the dog DNS client and even git tooling with lazygit.
Are the alternatives themselves modern software, or old-school scripts?Modern - the blurbs call out Rust rewrites like procs, a modern replacement for ps, and the picks lean toward fast, maintained replacements of aging classics.
