What is this?Herdr is a terminal runtime that coding agents like Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode, and Grok live on — it is a background server/multiplexer that keeps their terminal sessions running even after you close the client or lose your SSH connection, while organizing multiple agents into panes you can monitor at a glance.
Is this just another tmux, or something built specifically for agents? It behaves like a terminal multiplexer such as tmux, but it is agent-native: agents can drive herdr directly through its CLI and socket API to spawn panes, prompt each other, and wait until another agent is genuinely blocked.
Do I still need Claude Code, Codex, or my other agents installed separately?Yes — herdr does not wrap or replace your coding agents, it just owns their terminals, so you install Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode, Grok, etc. yourself and run them inside herdr panes.
What happens to my running agents if the machine restarts?Herdr restores the saved pane layout after a server or machine restart and can resume supported agent sessions, but the original agent processes themselves do not survive the restart.
Does it run on Windows as well as macOS and Linux?Yes — herdr ships as a single Rust binary with no Electron, installable via Homebrew or mise on macOS/Linux and via a PowerShell script on Windows.
How does herdr tell me when an agent is stuck?Every pane is marked working, blocked, or idle, so when an agent stops and needs an answer herdr flags it instead of you hunting through terminals.
Can I manage agents on remote machines, not just locally?Yes, herdr keeps local work and saved SSH machines together in one combined agent list with independent reconnects, so you can watch agents across several machines from a single window.
Can I extend herdr with plugins?Yes, herdr has a plugin system for extending panes and workflows, and plugins can be browsed through its marketplace.
Is herdr keyboard-only like tmux, or can I use the mouse too? Both — herdr supports tmux-style prefix-key shortcuts alongside first-class mouse click, drag, and split, so you can switch between them depending on the moment.
