A Kakoune / Neovim inspired editor, written in Rust.

The editing model is very heavily based on Kakoune; during development I found myself agreeing with most of Kakoune's design decisions.

For more information, see the website or documentation.

All shortcuts/keymaps can be found in the documentation on the website.

Troubleshooting

Features

Although it's primarily a terminal-based editor, I am interested in exploring a custom renderer (similar to Emacs) using wgpu.

Note: Only certain languages have indentation definitions at the moment. Check runtime/queries/<lang>/ for indents.scm.

What is this?Helix is a modal text editor inspired by Kakoune and Neovim, written in Rust, with built-in language server support and tree-sitter powered syntax highlighting and code editing out of the box.
Is this a GUI app or does it run in the terminal? It is primarily a terminal-based editor; the author has mentioned wanting to explore a custom GUI renderer with wgpu someday, similar to Emacs, but that is not the current experience.
Is it closer to Vim or Kakoune in how editing works? Its editing model is very heavily based on Kakoune rather than classic Vim, with selection-first commands; full shortcut and keymap listings are documented on the website.
Does every language get proper auto-indentation?No, only certain languages currently have indentation definitions; you can check runtime/queries/ /indents.scm to see what is supported.
Does it support multiple cursors like Kakoune?Yes, multiple selections are a core editing feature, letting you select and edit several pieces of text at once.
Do I need to install a language server separately for code intelligence?Helix has a built-in LSP client, but you still need the actual language server binary (e.g. rust-analyzer, pyright) installed for diagnostics and completion to work.
How does syntax highlighting work?It uses tree-sitter for smart, incremental syntax highlighting and structural code editing instead of regex-based highlighting.
Who designed the Helix logo? The logo was designed by a community contributor credited in the README's Credits section.
