What is this?A collection of circuit diagrams and firmware source code for Google's quirky, often absurd DIY keyboards, most of which started out as April Fools' Day gags for Google Japanese Input and later Gboard (e.g. a Morse-code keyboard, a drum-set keyboard, a spoon that bends to type).
Is this one project or an index of many? It's an index of many separate joke keyboard projects, roughly one per year since 2010, each living in its own folder with its own firmware, schematics and PCB files (for example /mozc-morse, /mozc-flap, /mozc-piropiro).
How do I build or flash one of these keyboards? There's no single build process - pick the device you want and check the README inside its own subfolder (e.g. /mozc-caps, /mozc-dial) for the firmware, schematic and PCB build instructions.
Can I actually get the source for every version shown? No - a few entries, like the 2010 Drum Set version and the 2014 Magic Hand version, are listed but marked as closed source, so only some of the yearly joke keyboards are actually buildable.
Which keyboard here is the weirdest?Probably the 2019 Spoon Bending version, where typing happens by physically bending a spoon, with its firmware and PCB layout in /mozc-mageru and a separate 3D model in /thirdparty/mozc-mageru.
Is this list still being updated?Yes, new entries keep appearing yearly, with the project list currently extending through October 2026, such as the Gboard Conveyor Belt version.
Why did Google build all these odd keyboards? They're playful, non-serious devices (originally April Fools' jokes) that showcase absurd alternative ways to type Japanese rather than practical input methods, and the repo explicitly isn't an official Google product.
