What is this?
ExoPlayer was Google's open-source media player library for Android. This GitHub repository is deprecated and stale — all development has moved to AndroidX Media3.
Is this a library I add to my Android app, or a standalone player?
It is a Java library you add to an Android app, distributed as build artifacts — exoplayer:2.19.1 was the last one released from this project. It is not a standalone player app.
So where do I get the current version of ExoPlayer now?
From AndroidX Media3, which now publishes the latest ExoPlayer code. For existing code, the README links a migration guide and script that moves you to the Media3 package names.
Can I still start a new project with this repository?
No. Commits to the dev-v2 branch stopped as of 2024-04-03, exoplayer:2.19.1 was the final release, and no more are planned — new work happens in AndroidX Media3.
How much work is migrating an existing app to Media3?
There is an official migration guide plus an automated script for moving your code to the Media3 package names, so a good part of the transition can be scripted rather than rewritten by hand.
Is exoplayer:2.19.1 still okay to use if I skip the migration?
It remains the last published artifact, but nothing newer will ever ship from this repo — future development only happens in AndroidX Media3, and the maintainers say all users should migrate.
