What this is

PhotoSuite is a full-featured desktop raster and vector graphics editor designed with fidelity in mind rather than reinterpretation. Panels sit where you expect them, shortcuts match your muscle memory, dialogs expose identical fields, and tools behave exactly like the originals, right down to modifier keys. If you know Photoshop ~CS6, you already know PhotoSuite.

Disclaimer: Not affiliated with or endorsed by Adobe. Photoshop is a registered trademark of Adobe Inc., referenced here solely to describe the interface and behavioral specifications this project aims to replicate.

What this is not

Gimp. Or Affinity. I'm certain they have great features, but my goal is not to make a mega-app with a billion functions (however, feel free to create any plugins you want!) - but to offer graphic designers a legal way to edit PSDs for free.

Key features

Supported formats

PhotoSuite opens and exports a comprehensive range of raster, vector, and digital design formats:

Category Supported Formats

Standard Raster PNG, APNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF, TIFF, GIF, BMP, TGA, OpenEXR (.exr)
Vector & Document SVG, PDF, PostScript (.ps), EPS, EMF, WMF, DXF
Digital Design Sketch (.sketch), Figma (.fig), Affinity Photo/Designer (.af - WIP), GIMP (.xcf)
Camera RAW DNG, CR2, NEF, ARW, and standard camera RAW formats

Documentation

Comprehensive architecture guides and development documentation are located in docs/:

Document Description
docs/ARCHITECTURE.md Codebase architecture, module layering rules, directory layout, and design principles.
docs/PLUGINS.md Guide to writing sidebar plugins using standard HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
tests/README.md Behavioural test suite documentation, test harness, and mocking guidelines.
src/vendor/README.md Complete third-party vendor provenance, pinned commits, upstream licenses, and build scripts.

Building & testing

Prerequisites

Commands

npm run dev # Launch the app from source with Tauri
npm run build # Build the production application bundle for your current platform
npm test # Run the behavioral test suite (1,600+ tests)
npm run verify # Verify imports, cyclic dependencies, static bindings, and bootstrap
npm run lint # Run ESLint across src/

Automated cross-platform builds (macOS universal, Linux deb/rpm, Windows x64) are run on every release tag via GitHub Actions.

Inspiration and prior art

The primary inspiration for this project is Photopea, Ivan Kutskir's browser-based editor, which demonstrated that a desktop-class image editor with complete PSD fidelity is achievable in a web runtime. The author has also open-sourced many format libraries utilised by this project. An archive snapshot is available at ruanjiyang/Photopea-Offline.

Open source used here

Attribution and licence notices for everything bundled — vendored libraries, WebAssembly modules, icons, and the Rust crates linked into the binary — are collected in THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.md, which ships with the application alongside its own licence.

All third-party libraries live in src/vendor/ as pinned git submodules with their respective upstream licenses:

Searching Database…

What is this?PhotoSuite is a desktop image editor built to faithfully replicate classic Adobe Photoshop, with native PSD/PSB file compatibility.
Is this a native desktop app or does it run in a browser? It is a native desktop app built with Tauri v2: the editor UI runs as HTML5/WebAssembly/WebGL inside the system webview, while a lightweight Rust host handles filesystem access, native menus, dialogs and printing.
How do I get it running?Grab a pre-built package from the Releases page (Universal .dmg for macOS, .deb/.rpm for Linux, NSIS .exe for Windows), or clone the repository with --recursive and build it yourself with the Tauri toolchain.
What kind of editor is this not trying to be?It explicitly does not aim to be a GIMP- or Affinity-style mega-app packed with every possible feature; the goal is simply a free, legal way for designers to edit real PSD files, with extra functionality left to plugins.
Does any of my editing data leave my machine? No, everything runs locally with zero telemetry or cloud requirements, since the project is built to be offline-first and private.
Does PhotoSuite support plugins or scripting?Yes, it has a JavaScript/JSX scripting engine powered by Acorn, can parse and play back Photoshop Actions (.atn) files, and supports sandboxed sidebar plugins written in plain HTML/CSS/JS that talk to the host via IPC.
What file formats can it open besides PSD?A wide range: standard raster formats (PNG, JPEG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, BMP...), vector and document formats (SVG, PDF, Adobe Illustrator, EPS, DXF...), design files (Sketch, Figma, GIMP XCF), and camera RAW formats like DNG, CR2, NEF and ARW.
Does it support non-destructive editing?Yes, Smart Objects and Smart Filter stacks are non-destructive, and there's a deep History palette with snapshot support plus a Layer Comps palette for tracking design variants.
What inspired this project? The author cites Photopea, Ivan Kutskir's browser-based PSD editor, as the main inspiration, having already open-sourced many of the format libraries PhotoSuite reuses.
