For other issues, please file them to their appropriate sibling repos. We have links to many of them on our new issue page.

What is this? This is the source code for the .NET runtime itself - the code that builds the runtime, its base class libraries, and the shared host (dotnet) installers for all supported platforms.
Is this the whole .NET platform, or just one piece of it?Just the core piece: the runtime, the class libraries, and the dotnet host. Bigger stacks like ASP.NET Core live in their own sibling repos that the README links to.
How do I get it onto my machine? For normal use you do not build this repo - install an official release via the install link in the README. Building from source is contributor territory and follows the repo's Workflow Instructions.
Do I need Visual Studio to develop with it?No - the official starting page covers using .NET with Visual Studio, VS Code, or the plain command-line CLI, so an editor plus the .NET SDK is enough.
My bug turns out to be in ASP.NET Core, not the runtime - do I file it here?No - this repo only takes issues about the runtime, the class libraries and frameworks, and installing the dotnet binary (the muxer). Anything else belongs in its sibling repo.
Where does .NET actually run - is it Windows-only?No - it is a cross-platform runtime for cloud, mobile, desktop, and IoT apps, with installers built for all supported platforms, including Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS.
Can I try .NET builds before they are officially released?Yes - the Dogfooding .NET guide explains how to get nightly builds of the runtime and its libraries and test them in your own projects.
I'm new to .NET - where's the best place to learn it?The README links the official documentation, which has Get Started guides, tutorials, and porting material for developers coming from .NET Framework.
