OpenCore Legacy Patcher

A Python-based project revolving around Acidanthera's OpenCorePkg and Lilu for both running and unlocking features in macOS on supported and unsupported Macs.

Our project's main goal is to breathe new life into Macs no longer supported by Apple, allowing for the installation and usage of macOS Big Sur and newer on machines as old as 2007.

Noteworthy features of OpenCore Legacy Patcher:

Note: Only clean-installs and upgrades are supported. macOS Big Sur installs already patched with other patchers, such as Patched Sur or bigmac, cannot be used due to broken file integrity with APFS snapshots and SIP.

Note 2: Currently, OpenCore Legacy Patcher officially supports patching to run macOS Big Sur through Sonoma installs. For older OSes, OpenCore may function; however, support is currently not provided from Dortania.

Searching Database…

What is this?A Python-based tool built on Acidanthera's OpenCore and Lilu that revives Macs Apple no longer supports: it lets you install and run macOS Big Sur or newer on hardware as old as 2007.
Is this a GUI app I run on the Mac being patched, or a command-line utility? It's a GUI application you run on the Mac you want to revive, not a CLI. The backend is written in Python, and developers can also build and run the project from source.
How do I actually start patching my Mac?The README doesn't inline the steps — it points to the project's in-depth online guide as the official starting point, with a separate doc for building from source.
Can I point it at an install I already patched with another tool?No — only clean installs and upgrades are supported. An install already patched with other patchers like Patched Sur or bigmac can't be used because its APFS snapshots and SIP integrity are broken, though you can reinstall with this patcher and keep your original data.
My MacBook is from 2011 — can it really run a modern macOS with this?Anything with a Penryn or newer CPU qualifies, meaning hardware as old as 2007. The feature list covers Big Sur through Sequoia, though the README notes official patching support currently runs Big Sur through Sonoma; for Mojave or Catalina it recommends dosdude1's patchers.
What does patching actually fix on an old Mac?Quite a lot: full WPA Wi-Fi and Personal Hotspot on BCM943224 and newer chipsets, Sidecar and AirPlay to Mac, FileVault 2, SIP, .im4m Secure Boot, recovery/safe/single-user mode booting, plus enhanced SATA and NVMe power management.
Will I get real graphics acceleration on my old GPU?Yes — the patcher provides acceleration for both Metal and non-Metal GPUs, with community patch sets covering NVIDIA Tesla through Pascal, AMD TeraScale and GCN 1-5, and Intel 1st through 6th generation graphics.
Will my Mac keep getting normal macOS updates afterwards?Yes — native Over the Air (OTA) system updates are supported, and the patcher requires zero firmware patching (no APFS ROM patching), so the Mac's firmware stays untouched.
What if something goes wrong after patching — is there official support? It's offered on an AS-IS basis with no guaranteed support, but an active community Discord (OpenCore Patcher Paradise) plus debugging docs help you gather info so other users and developers can troubleshoot.
