################### What is CodeIgniter ###################

CodeIgniter is an Application Development Framework - a toolkit - for people who build web sites using PHP. Its goal is to enable you to develop projects much faster than you could if you were writing code from scratch, by providing a rich set of libraries for commonly needed tasks, as well as a simple interface and logical structure to access these libraries. CodeIgniter lets you creatively focus on your project by minimizing the amount of code needed for a given task.

CodeIgniter 3

This repository is for the legacy version, CodeIgniter 3. CodeIgniter 4 <https://github.com/codeigniter4/CodeIgniter4>_ is the latest version of the framework.

CodeIgniter 3 is the legacy version of the framework, intended for use with PHP 5.6+. This version is in maintenance, receiving mostly just security updates.

Server Requirements

PHP version 5.6 or newer is recommended.

It should work on 5.4.8 as well, but we strongly advise you NOT to run such old versions of PHP, because of potential security and performance issues, as well as missing features.

Searching Database…

What is this?CodeIgniter is an open-source PHP framework (a toolkit) for building web applications faster by providing ready-made libraries for common tasks instead of writing everything from scratch.
Is this the current version of CodeIgniter or something older? This repository is specifically the legacy CodeIgniter 3 branch; active development has moved to CodeIgniter 4, which lives in a separate repository.
How do I add it to a PHP project? You download or clone this repository and run it with PHP on a web server; it is a plain PHP codebase with no package manager install step described.
Do I need anything besides PHP to run it?Just a PHP environment capable of running PHP 7 or PHP 8; the repo's own CI tests against PHPUnit for PHP.
Should I start a new project with this version?Since this is the legacy CodeIgniter 3 line, new projects are better served by CodeIgniter 4, which is maintained separately going forward.
Who is this framework aimed at?PHP developers who want to build websites quickly without hand-rolling common functionality like database access, sessions, or form handling.
What does CodeIgniter actually provide out of the box?A rich set of libraries for commonly needed web development tasks, plus a simple interface and logical structure to access them, so you write less boilerplate code.
Where did CodeIgniter originally come from?It originated from EllisLab before being handed off to the community and later BCIT, which is reflected in the project's acknowledgements.
What are similar projects?symfony, yii2, hapi, filament, beego, framework, uuid, riot
