What is this?
hapi (@hapi/hapi) is a Node.js web framework for building powerful, scalable applications with minimal overhead and full out-of-the-box functionality — 'your code, your way'.
Is it a full framework, or a collection of libraries I wire together myself?
It is a full web framework: you add @hapi/hapi as an npm dependency and it handles the HTTP layer for you — routing, request handling and responses — while internally it is composed from bundled @hapi/* modules.
How do I get a hapi server running?
Install it with npm install @hapi/hapi (requires Node.js 14.15.0 or newer), then create a server, define routes and start it; the hapi.dev portal has tutorials and the full API reference.
What do I need installed before I can use it?
Only Node.js, version 14.15.0 or newer. Everything hapi needs ships as bundled @hapi/* modules (caching, routing, MIME handling, error payloads), so there is no native compilation and no database requirement.
What does hapi give you out of the box besides routing?
A lot: caching via @hapi/catbox, MIME-type handling via @hapi/mimos, standardized error payloads via @hapi/boom, and server events via @hapi/podium all ship bundled. That is what the README means by 'full out-of-the-box functionality'.
Does hapi cost anything, or are there paid tiers?
No. It is a free, open-source project, and the tutorials and documentation on the hapi.dev developer portal are freely available as well.
